Talking

G/F and i went to my brothers at thw w/end.

He has just bought a bose 'life style'(i think that's what it's called) system and 52" plasma screen.

The sound quality (and i'm a *really* fussy git) was exceptionally good, with the tiny cubic speakers and sub behind one of the sofas. Was all very neat and (apart from the plasma) wopuld not really know it was there.

I have heard a lot of systems in the past and the sound from this was far more 'natural', and blew a lot of the other system away.

The system is a decoder and DVD player all in one.

Just my 2p's worth.

Looking to purchase one for christmas and was thinking what is the best one to go for

They range from a bush for 100 to 1000 quid for a state of the art sony

Seen a phillips for 400 quid that looked pretty good 5.1 200rms I think the model code was 710fx from commet

Does the above sound a good buy?

Best bet in the long run is to get a 'proper' system ( AV amp + 5 speakers ) from a hifi/home cinema specialist. You should be able to demo the complete package and see for yourself what you like.

Look for plenty of inputs ( including optical ), DD5.1 minimum, DTS is a bonus.

Add in a couple of hundred for interconnects & cables, and expect to spend more than you originally thought

If you are on a budget, your local richer sounds is a good place to start looking.

On a more economical note....

I have a Sony DAVS500, all in one job and to be honest it is pretty good. It sounds great as long as you are not trying to fill a huge room. Cost about £550 last year (with multi-region) and for the money it's very good. IMO if you don't want to spend big bucks it's pretty good.

I'm running a Yamaha DSP A2 Amp which I got a good deal on. Must be a fair bit cheaper now. Also Mission speakers that I've built up over time and a castle centre (no sub). Mission do a nice 5.1 speaker package tho if you want to get all speaskers at same time for a reassonable price.

Nice

I have a Sherwood AV amp with 5.1 & DTS & 6 channel input it cost me around £199 from Richer Sounds. I then bought a Mission Cinema Speaker Pack for around £300. I looked at many systems but could not tell much difference in sound quality between this set up and a £1000+ system. You do need to set a budget and then go and listen to some set ups, make sure you check prices on the internet as you can find some very good deals.

Have you already got a decent amp and speakers from your hifi? If so, you could do worse than add an external processor thingy like the Yamaha DSP E-800. It's the processor but also has 3 channels of amplification for rears and centre. YOu use your existing amp for the fronts...

If you do decide to go seperates, i'd sugest getting an amp which has the capabities to connect to power amps and also has inputs so you can connect a processor to it if you decide you want to upgrade this will make it more cost effective as you can slowly build up for a base point. Also if you don't mind second hand goods get home cinema choice or go here i've purchased stuff from here with no problems.
Also go with what your ears are telling you we are all different and not all of us can tell the difference between £1,000 worth of audio as oppossed to £15,000 worth.

Cheers
Si

From memory the Sony DAVS500 was voted best surround/dvd package last year (What ?? mag) . DVD has built in tuner as well. Should find one for around £500 now.

I've got a Yamaha RXV800 http://www.yamaha-audio.co.uk/pdfs/s.../RXV800RDS.pdf and Mission speakers which I love. It handles Dolby 6.1, DD and DTS so covers pretty much anything on current DVDs.

I also use the DVD player and amp for playing CDs now. It kicks out 500w RMS and my sub is 150w on top. I got a deal on the lot and paid less than £900.

For less money the Yamaha HTiB kits (amp, speakers and sub) take some beating.

Yamaha or Denon amps seem to be highly regarded.
