Hello
My initial reaction as well. But if you think about it a little more, what choice did they have? They certianly were not going to give in to their demands, and if the terrorists really had bombs strapped to themselves they would have killed all 700 people.
Steve.

At least make sure the medical services can cope with the affects of the gas... And use one that is safer.

I've had lots of experience of entering dangerous buildings full of nutters...I take my wife to "Brent Cross" once a month.

"Like the Americans.....All muscle and No brains."
No...Americans would have negotiated for days and then after that failed they would have gone in with guns blazing killing way more than the Russians did.

They have a different set of values. No European Court of Human Rights or American lawyers to get in their way.
How do you think the Soviet Union kept control of the region for so long? By coming down hard on any trouble makers with the Red Army.
One thing's for sure, I bet you won't see any more attempts at hostage taking for a while.

The Russians joined hte Council of Europe in the 1990s and therefore are bound both by the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms 1950 and human rights law in general.
As for their strategy - Alpha Force have trained with the SAS and the FBI HRT. I can't criticise their decision as I do not know the circumstances in which it was made - all we have is a slanted version from the press. What I can say is this - they would not have made that decision unless they thought it was the best option at the time. Sure 117 people died and many more might have died had they not gone in the way they did. That's not the point.
The point is that if it was the best option, WHY was that the best option? WHY do we put ourselves in positions where the use of force is the best option? I don't have all the answers, and I don't claim to, but when 117 people die like that, something needs to be examined very closely.

My point was that the West (particularly the US and Europe) has a habit of judging the whole world by its own standards. We might think that using force is wholly unacceptable and that we should negotiate, but they might not. Not every country thinks that losing a single human life is the ultimate sin.
Personally, it sounds like they made a mistake in the concentration of the gas, they should have allowed for the health & age of the hostages and the closed-in nature of the building.

Anyone remember when the Russian submarine disaster. I remember seeing a mother of someone who'd died due to neglegence shouting at a government official at a press conference. Next thing you know, some woman comes and injects her with something and puts her out - right on T.V!
They seem to have a different set of morals to the Western world?
