my boss has just bought a sony multi region player from richer sounds, that was less around £250.
myself, i have a wharfdale 750 which is multi region, i got that from tesco's £160.

Check out www.techtronics.com , just ordered a Multi-region Tosh...220SE which has RCE support - so it will play new DVD's like the Matrix. They both come highly recommended 
But the Tosh might be a bit below your budget - was only £165 
(Oh and you get three free DVD's)

I was into importing Laser Discs before DVD's and been into importing DVD's from the start.
To be honest at this price point I would only use www.techtronics.com
Edited to add that NASA wanted multiregion players for the international space station. They couldn't afford to buy players that were unreliable or wouldn't play all the Discs. They bought them from Techtronics.

I just replaced an Oritron player from Woolies (100 quid) with acoustic solution 551 from Richer sounds (119 quid!).
It plays multi region inc. RCE, CDR/CDRW and DVD R /RW.
I can now write megs to DVD and watch them on TV. They appear as a menu like win explorer and you just select them....
