Can you stop paper junk mail?

Is there anyway of stopping junk mail from being delivered through your letter box? There are registers for faxes & phones but I can't find one for paper junk mail.

Did it for me.
Takes up to 28 days for it to work through the system but I got hardly any junk mail now.

What about all the rubbish that posty seems to bring to us as well as the real post - local DIY store leaflets, fantastic DG opportunities etc etc
Does Consignia (/whatever) have an opt out scheme?

Could be a good one to add to all of the 'revenge' thread suggestions.

use the MPS system as above... and also make sure you tick the little box saying you dont want future offers from companys when u sign up for anything that involves giving your address!
having worked for royal mail for nearly 15 years MPS is the only way to "reduce" junk mail... though i doubt you can stop it completely as much of the stuff is from your banks, creditcard companys, etc!
it can take up to 12months to vastly reduce addressed junk mailings to your home, though you can stop the "unaddressed" stuff immediatly (leaflets that come with your mail) by telephoning the royal mail customer services, 08457 740 740 (i think)and asking your "door to door" leaflets to be stopped as from now!

just send it back - no stamp obviously. they soon stop sending it when thay have to pay for it at the other end
good idea... except these companys in general refuse items that are such like and they end up being sent to the return letter office to be destroyed in their thousands each day!

From the Consignia web site

Opt-out scheme (householder)
This is the door-to-door equivalent of the Mailing Preference Scheme (MPS). It enables householders to opt out of receiving Royal Mail Door to Door items.
In the past, householders wishing to opt out of unaddressed-mail deliveries have had to make a separate arrangement with each distribution company. The DMA Door to Door Council is currently developing a centralised system, to be operated by the DMA. For the latest information, please contact the DMA.
A disadvantage of opt-out is that it covers all door-drop deliveries. It is not practical for delivery staff to decide what items an opted-out household might nevertheless like to receive. As a result, members of the household may miss useful information such as Local Authority notifications about road works or holiday-period refuse collections, as well as information circulated by the Government.
For further details of the current process, or a copy of the standard opt-out letters, please call our helpline on 01865 780 400, or email media.markets.helpline@royalmail.co.uk

I'll be looking at our Door to Door junk to see how much of the quoted disadvantages I think i might suffer from...
