Angry

Did anyone watch the BBC programme on the box last night !?!

Can't believe Becks got in at 35.. Bowie in at number 18 or something.. bloody Paul McCartney above him... and worst of the worst.... Diana in the top 10 !!!

A lot of people in there changed the world as we know it... and featured a lot lower than these peeps... something's a bit wrong somewhere !!

What did you all think of it ????

Cool

I think you're right about Becks.

He should have been much higher up the list - possibly top 10.

How did Aleister Crowley make it in at all? And Richard III? Just proves my point: the general public needs shooting and quickly

yes there were a few weird selections (diana? robbie williams? crowley? beckham? michael crawford FFS!) but the vast vast majority were good 'uns and truly great. just goes to show that we haven't all become a "Hello!" society yet. i feared it would be much much worse than it was.

i'm predicting a top 3 of:

1. Churchill
2. Shakespeare
3. Elizabeth I

if diana gets its the top slot, then i will be horrified - seeing as she has contributed neither nothing great nor of lasting value to the heritage of this country. can't really see her being talked about in revered tones in 500 years...

It all depends on how you look at it.My top 10 would include my mum,dad and sister.
I'm also a Becks fan,but not sure how he fits into this sort of poll.
As for Shakespeare, complete load of crap if you ask me.Never read anything, couldn't give you one single quote,or comment that he said.Just peolpe jumping on the bandwagon...

I don't believe that. Surely you must have heard of "To be, or not to be", "Wherefore art thou Romeo" or even "Hubble bubble, toil and trouble"

Red face

Yeah, I wasn't impressed either. Diana, Robbie Williams and David Beckham

Pity most people can't think past the last 5yrs and how little they know about history

I mean, how has Beckham or Williams made Britain such a Great nation? One's a ponce with a mullet and married to a stick insect and the other's just a fat mime-artist

Of course i've heard these phrases,...but WTF do they mean and how do they contribute to the betterment of society.
Oscar Wilde on the other hand,is much more relevant.(not sure if he's classed as a Brit though). At least he made some intelligent observations on people, and life in general.

And Naf....there famous to me....

south-star

why? it's art and a commentary on the human condition that is of sufficient great and lasting value to be read wherever the english language is spoken or understood.

For the same reason Jade didn't know who Einstein was perhaps?

I could begin an argument about how "relevance" is one of the creeping socialist malaises that keeps the poor and downtrodden where they are by insisting that poor deprived people are only allowed to read about other poor deprived people because that's all that is relevant to them, but I just can't be bothered.

Perhaps if you read a bit more you'd avoid the odd double negative creeping in

Sheepy,
Just remember if it wasn't for a great scotsman u wouldn't be looking at your monitor to have this conversation, nor would be on the internet cos there would be no phone lines, nor would you be able to phone me on my mobile to tell me u thought of one

On a serious note, the one thing this poll has shown, good or bad,
is that this little island has brought a hell of a lot of philosophies/inventions to the world.
Pity that the royal that actually gave us Great Britain ( JamesVI of Scotland JamesI of England was not even in the top 100)

"They can tak' away oor oil and oor water but they cannae tak' oor
Frrrreeeeeeeeedddddooooooommmmmmmmm"
