Take a hat, scarf and gloves.
And if the smog hasn't cleared, a gas mask too.
Great place akkktually. Make sure you get over to St Petersberg as well...

Excellent place, been there twice but not recently.
Very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter.
Take the usual precautions for any big city.
The Kremlin is stunning as is the underground system (I kid you not). The Russians are passionate about their sacrifices during WW2 so a decent guided tour is well worth the effort to see all the relevant sites.
St Petersberg is indeed amazing too, go there if you get the chance.
Have fun, you will love it.

My mate went there about 6 years ago. Said she saw people Qing round the block for meat that was so rotten it had turned green. Women weren't safe in the street day or night, etc. Beautiful place but not somewhere you'd visit if you had the dosh to visit somewhere else. Still, that was then - may have changed loads. So I don't really know what I'm talking about.
Yeah, I've got me coat...

Never saw any queing when I was there, the markets were full of fresh food etc.
People would approach you in the street trying to buy your trainers etc for cash dollars, steer clear if approached (unlikely nowadays).
Organised crime is a problem over there but if you are sensible you should be fine.
Try some Kvass if you can get it, they sell it from huge barrels by the side of the street (its a refreshing drink).
