Timber frame house company. A friend just had one built. I have to say that I like very much what I've seen. (Should be finished in November) and we are considering one in a few of years when our current project house is complete...

I am considering getting one built myself. Ony thing worrying me is getting the finance for it. I don't think banks are too keen on lending for a house that doesn't exist yet. If anyone has any good pointers on where to look for the morgage i'd be grateful.

Definitely seems a better option with current house prices. Plus i'd get to add a huge garage to it

Cool

Check out the Grand Designs page at the Channel4.com homes area. Also, you might want to join the UK Self-build email discussion list at groups.yahoo.com.

Build-it magazine's a good place to look, too.

Thumbs up

Ony thing worrying me is getting the finance for it. I don't think banks are too keen on lending for a house that doesn't exist yet.
Basically, they lend the money in stages. So they'll release the first lump when you buy the plot, then more when you have planning complete, and lay the foundations. The next lump will be released when you start building the structure, and the last lot when the house is watertight (for fittings etc). That way their liability is limited, since even a partially-built house is almost always worth more than the land and building costs it took to get it to that point.
If anyone has any good pointers on where to look for the morgage i'd be grateful.
Check out the Build-It link above, or buy the magazine. There are hundreds of companies which specialise in this sort of thing, now it's becoming more popular.
