Question

Ahoy!!!

I want to get a small and I meen small boat to use on the rivers and broads around my way. I plan to store it at home and transport it to whatever places I can find to use it on. I know some of you folk out there own or have access to some serious bits of kit so I need a bit of info.

What are the requirements as far as insurance goes? Is there such a thing as an MOT for boats and what about a driving license????

I might be able to get an old boat and do it up over winter so any good related web-sites would be handy.

Cheers,

Karl

No general legal requirement to have insurance but there might be local requirements for third party cover (the marina I keep my sailing boat at requires £2M third party cover for example). Bearing in mind how much damage you could do to someone else's gin palace it isn't something I'd try and avoid.

Likewise no "MOT" equivalent. And no requirement for any licence although unless you're very sure you know what you're doing I'd recommend some sort of training - if only to stop people laughing at you when/if you get it totally wrong An RYA level 2 powerboat course takes about two days and costs £65 upwards.
