where do I stand???

8 weeks ago i booked a week off... this week... and right up until thursday was having a lovely relaxing time doing not too much!.. on thursday i was called back into work as the guy that was covering my job had a hospital appointment and the only other person trained to do my job was taking his day off.. so (as i am a reliable and loyal worker) i went in and covered the day for them.... only to be told that they did not have any cover for saturday either and would i be able to, again, cancel my holiday to go to work..... now normally not a problem BUT.. it is my birthday this weekend and i really would like to have my holiday time off, not having had any time off since April, and i am only covering the job i am doing on a tempory basis until the company sorts out something more perminant, i am not being paid any extra money whilst i am covering, even though it is a managers job.
i was just wondering... now getting to the point.... if i refuse to go in tomorrow when they phone in the morning...(they have not let me know one way or the other if they actually DO need me to work as i did say i had plans and would be gratefull if something else could be arranged) can they actually DO anything to me... i.e sack me? refuse the offer of the job that is nearly ready and on the table? refuse to let me back to my old job?
would be gratefull for any views

You are entitled to your holidays, if your manager can't even manage his resource effectively then more fool him.
Unless you have this covered in your contract I would have though you have nothing to worry about.
Enjoy your time off and let them worry about work !!

i dont actually have a contract!!!!
i have worked there for 18months as a mechanic, and have been covering the managers job for the past 8 weeks as they were left in the lurch.
uh oh.. phones ringing

Bloody bosses for you there mate, never had one who could appreciate the fact that i may have a life outside of work. Last time i got asked to work on my birthday (even though i'd booked the time of months before) my reply was along the lines of:
" Er, okay, i'll be in about lunchtime, probably still pissed from the night before..."
Phoned in sick...

No offence, but you seem to be a guy who is willing to help out. Therefore people around you are playing on the fact. They must be aware its your birthday, yet still ask you to come in when Joe Bloggs is off because he feels a bit sick, hmmmmm.
Easy touch springs to mind....make a stand and dont let people take advantage of your good nature.

he wont take offence to that...
it IS hard to say no, especially when you live practically next door to place.. also billy knows that if he didnt help then on monday the place would be in **** street with no paddle... and quite frankly he is too loyal to his customers as well to see them go away with out their bike!

Ask them that if you work that day, can you have an extra day on top of what you are owed. Bit of courtesy and all that.
You scratch their back they should scratch yours!
