Just got a Tivo from Comet for the low price of £150. A guy at work raves about his. What do you people think of these things. The idea seems good. I wonder what they are like day to day.

I've had mine a year, and I now almost always watch Tivo recordings rather than live TV. Each evening I just look at the 'Now Playing' screen to see what it's recorded for me over the last 24 hours, and watch the programmes in the order I want with no adverts. I don't know how I ever managed without it.

Tip: if your Tivo is brand new, wait for it to connect to the service and download the latest software (2.x.x) before setting up all your season passes and ratings - the new s/w treats them a bit differently.

Would'nt be without it now. Its so much easier to watch programs you've recorded than a VCR. WIth a VCR I used to wonder what tape they were on, where abouts on the tape was it etc etc.

I bought one three months ago and i never miss an episode of anything. much better than watching live tv. only problem is that is stops recording dead on time so sometimes you miss the very end of things... you can set it to record an extra 2mins of everything but then it decides that it can't record the next prog..

 

Does it intigrate with Sky Digital?

I quite fancy a pvr but the sky one seems a bit pricey..

 

Yes, don't have sky digital, but it comes with 'IR Blasters' to control external cable/sky boxes to change their channel for recording.

As for usefulness? Very, mine died a month after I got it and I got a replacement, was away for a week, amazing how much I missed it. As others have said, you just whack in your season passes for the TV you like, then kinda stop watching stuff when it's on and watch it when you want and skip all the adverts.

Rob - yes Sky digital works fine with it - if it didn't I wouldnt have bought it.

Yup - fantastic invention. Bought one when Powerhouse did a special Jubilee Weekend offer

Cliched, but it really does change the way you watch television. For example, when I come in at night there is normally very little I actually want to watch on at that time. So instead, you can simply access all of the pre-recorded programs either you have marked for recording, or the Tivo has recorded for you based on your own ratings of what you like/don't like and have watched previously Bingo - your own personalised TV viewing schedule.

It does take a bit of getting used to, and can throw up some amusing suggestions initially until it get used to your viewing preferences, but it gets a big thumbs up overall.

You literally NEVER watch live TV. Episodes of the Simpsons when I want. ALways records channel 4's WRC coverage without me having to remember what time it's on or to set the VCR. A great addition to any home setup.

Get the lifetime subscription if you can afford it. Much better value for money than monthly!
