I work in the electronics industry and we are being forced to wear safety glasses. I'm wearing them under protest but we are being threatened with disciplinary action if we don't. My question is...Can my employer legally force us to wear safety glasses?
The way I see it, they are my eyes so I should have the right treat them as I want. Surely then if it is company policy to wear them, and if I was to sign some sort of disclaimer absolving the company of any liability, then only I could be held resonsible,right?
Any one got any ideas what I should do?

I might add that this isn't my normal user name.

They could make it a condition of employment but would have to confirm this in writing to you.

If they do not do this, you have every right to not wear them but they would frown on this big time because is you develop an eye problem later on, you could blame them for not forcing you to wear the safety glasses!!!

Thanks for the reply Mak. The only reference is in the company hand book which states that it's a condition of employment that we agree to abide by the rules regarding health and safety. It doesn't specifically mention the glasses though.

To be honest even if you signed something and you had not been warned about wearing the glasses there is a chance you could sue if something did happen.

Hence the pressure on you to wear them, is it really so much of a hassle? I dont know the issues but I would not fancy going blind much tends to spoil the driving enjoyment.
