Alot will depend on the type of life cover you are asking for:-
The direct companies are fiercly competitive at the moment, you could do a lot worse than looking at page 175 of The Money Management magazine (which will geive you a brief comparative summary table) - published each month by the Financial Times(WH Smith sell them).
At present Tesco seem to be considerably cheaper than some of the mainstream companies - but cheaper is not always a guarantee etc etc.
Speak to an INDEPENDENT Financial Adviser who can quote on all companies available.
PS I am an IFA

Based on a very unpleasant experience a couple of years back all I would say is do not use a certain company whose initials are S W, and the second word is not windows! I sadly had to make a claim on a life insurance policy and they did everything possible to delay paying out. This is the last thing you need at such a time. It got to the stage where the coroner phoned SW himself to tell them their behaviour was disgraceful (his own words) and they eventually payed up.
Only my personal experience but not something I would wish on anybody else.

check out easyvalue.co.uk..... i work in the industry and have no idea how they get such a discount on the biz they write, in particular Norwich Union seem to be doing some huge deal with them as their prices via their web site are VERY low.

If you are after simple term assurance go for the cheapest you can find on the www - after all if you die then they can't argue about it but if you are after a protection element as well (ie. disability etc) then I would goto an IFA.
