Using a UK Mobile in USA
#1
Has anyone had any experience of using a UK tri band mobile in the USA ( Florida in particular) just read on a couple of web sites that reception is a bit patchy to say the least, they recommend hiring a proper American phone, lots of different standards over there apparently.

I think the patchy reception is more to do with the networks rather than the fone itself.
It seems that there are only 1 or 2 operators using the GSM1900 standard, Voicestream (now T-mobile) and Sprint PCS (or Virgin Mobile) among them.
The most popular standard there is AMPS/D-AMPS.

Used my mates ericcson on Vodafone over in Florida (Kissimee) and had no issues at all. He was the only one with a tri-band mobile (at the time) so we all just swapped sim card and used it as our own.

As well as the local reception, it depends upon your operator having an agreement with the local operator.
For example I was in Baltimore and could get a signal but the local operator barred all my calls.
My colleague who had an identical phone (Motorola Triband) could make and receive calls no problem.
The difference? I'm with Orange, he was with Vodaphone.
The next day we went to Washington and neither had any problems!
