They dont use Tri band phones in the US.
We are sooo far ahead in our mobile comms, its unreal!
Only when we travel there do we need triband.
You'll just have to try it. I have had some real strange things happen when my users go to the US. Can make calls, send and receive text messages, but not recieve calls. Was ok when he moved to another network though.

UK uses 900 and 1800. US uses 1900. Standard UK phone (dual band) does 900 and 1800, standard US phone does 1900 only, tri-band does all three.
When I was there last year, I took my tri-band motorola, and was amazed to discover that not only did texting work, but it cost the same texting UK phones on the same network from Washington as it did from Kent, although call charges were MUCH higher. Whether that was a mistake or because I had international roaming enabled, I don't know.

As far as I'm aware you can't text from the UK to US phones. My girlfriend is a yank as she never recieved text messages when I tried.
In anycase calling was much cheaper at 3p per minute anytime. Cheaper calling her than it is to speak to my parents 100 miles away. How mad its that !
Now she's over here and its MUCH easier

When I've been across in Houston, my UK Triband can text mobiles in the UK.... But AFAIK, if it's a US mobile you can't text it. The yanks are big on 2way paging rather than SMS.

SMS has really taken off throughout the most of europe. Surprisingly I think Greece has one of the highest SMS throughputs in Europe.
It hasn't really taken off as much in the US, and agree that for some reason pagers seem to be more popular.
