OK I'm thick
I have £100 or thereabouts to spend on a DVD player. Can anyone suggest a good make/model and what to look out for. Also is it OK to buy online and where?
Cheers

I would recommend the Toshiba SD110 from Richer Sounds
Or save yourself £50 and get the Limit DVD8080 Multi Region DVD player for £49.99
Loads at Richer Sounds for under £100
No connection . . blah . . blah.

if the dixons one is the goodmans one dont touch it with anything let alone a 5 mile barge pole, i got one at x-mas as a second one it plays region 2 ok but region 1 it stutters or doesn't play skips chapters slows down, wont play vcd's picture quality is crap also. oh an layer change takes about 8-10 seconds
but my first and best one is an alba dvd 103
multi region out of the box no hacks plays rce encoded discs, mp3's, vcd, svcd, sound is v good supports dts picture is also very good considering its price £130 2 years ago i have 80+ dvd's and it plays everyone of them and all the extras.

Make sure whatever you buy is fully multi region compatable and will play region 1 RCE discs. Beware that RCE R1 DVD's will not play on players that are region free or region 0 as they check to make sure the player is set to region 1. RCE is being added to more and more DVD's so don't limit yourself.
Have a look at www.techtronics.com for all the info.

Hi
I went through the same as you about 9 months ago. Just wanted a sub £100 player that would be region free and anything else was a bonus. After reading reviews and forums on the net, the best value one was the Dansai unit that Tesco's sell.
I've been really impressed with mine and I think they're about £80 now!!! Even better is that as well as playing DVD's (region free), they also do VCD, and play MP3's or music CD's. Oh yeah, you can also switch Macrovision off to "back up" films onto VHS if you so wish

As stated above I wouldn't recommend buying any region free players as it looks like more studios will be adopting some form of RCE that checks to see if the players are set to the correct region. If its an original disc with RCE it will not play on a region free player.
You can get fully chipped multiregion players with macrovision removed for under £125 now. Its not worth scrimping £40 on something that will not play DVD's in the future IMO.
If you are going to limit yourelf to region 2 you may as well just buy the cheapest R2 player you can find. Bit pointless though as the true multiregion players are hardly expensive.

The LG 4710 is only £106 + Vat at techtronics. Complete with multimod.
Have a look round their site. I've had a total of seven players (Friends and Family )from them and excellent service when one broke after around seven months.
They were the first to crack RCE and when NASA wanted multi region players for the International Space Station they bought them from Techtronics in the UK.

Just looked at that LG 4710 on the site you recommended and am very interested. Is this a good make/ model? It annoys me though that they don't put the price including VAT!

The LG's get good write ups in Home Cinema Choice magazine.
Depends what your after really. Are you just after a DVD player to play genuine DVD's from anywhere in the world, if so the LG is spot on. If you want to put copied discs in and play mp3's then look at some other players like the Samsung S224 @ £115 + Vat.
The LG4710 like most decent branded players towards the cheaper end of the market do not have on board Dolby Digital or DTS decoding but will output it as a digital bitstream. This is hardly a handicap as most people who upgrade to multichannel buy an HC amp which does the decoding and all DD TV's have digital inputs to decode DD. Obviously it has stereo phono outputs for stereo and prologic.
One added bonus with the LG is that it will convert NTSC to true PAL50 so there wont be any problem with older TV's or portables handling the signal.
On the copied DVD issue I have tried a few but have been totaly dissapointed with the picture but mainly the sound. The DD and DTS sound mixes are not at all true with channel bleed and inacurate steering. Suppose they are OK if your watching on a smallish stereo TV.
