It bugs me, cause it reminds me of work.

Oh too many tax returns to do.

<Professional hat on>
Just as a reminder
You only have to submit your tax return for the year ended 5th April 2002 by the 30th September if you want the Inland Revenue to calculate your liability

If you dont you have until the 31st January 2003 to submit the return, but you must calculate it yourself

Or you could pay someone like my firm to do it for you

Intaxification - the feeling of euphoria you get when receiving a tax refund cheque, which lasts just until you realise that it was your money anyway.

<shudders> - it is there now looking at me

This will be my first tax return, but I only started in January so only have to submit three months to April 2002 - I think I only had 1 cheque in that time so should be easy.

Anyone got any tips? Could I claim expenses for my PC stuff which was bought 2 years back - I dont have a receipt.

Cant afford an accountant yet.

Hold up there. There are alsorts to consider re expenses, assets introduced into business etc etc.

You dont necessarily have to choose the 5th April as a year end. There are often very good legitimate tax planning reasons for choosing a different date. Not only that there can be very beneficial cash flow advantages if you choose the right date.

It is often best to get an accountant involved if you have your own business. Choose any as i am not trying to sell myself.

The Inland revenue like people such as yourself because they get paid the tax pretty soon after the profits are made, and not after 18 months.

Like i say the list is endless as to what legitimate items you can claim for.

You could end up getting a tax refund if the planning is done correctly.

You pay for what you get.

Can someone explain to me what the hell 'payments on account' are. I know you have to pay 50% in Jan and 50% in July, and appear to be for the following tax year.
Is this just a way of the IR estimating how much you are going to pay, and getting the cash in ealier (so they can get interest on it)?
Do you have to pay it, or can you tell them to get stuffed and pay it the following Jan?

Chris im no accountant but i thnk your actually playing catch up with your payments.

In jan2003 you will be paying on self asseement figures from apr2001 to apr2002 depending on your year end and the first payment is due jan2003 if that makes sense?

You can deffer a payment buy saying you think your not going to earn as much in the next 6 months, but if your figures dont tally at the end you will have to pay interest on the under paid amount which is currently 8% i think so it aint bad

Possibly, it depends whats involved, and how much you want to pay.

The reason i say that is some people baulk at paying £100 quid for a tax return preparing(excluding any self employed/partnership accounts, etc) when the tax figures they are talking about run into several thousands/tens of thousands, etc. They then moan when they receive poor service and poor quality after paying a very cheap amount.

Its a bit like cars really, if it appears cheap, its usually for a reason. You sometimes get repairs done for the amount you want to pay, or you get charged a sensible price for the repair doing properly.

If you want any info on the firm i work for email me and i will endeavour to send some out. (Subject to stock levels)

My firm is a small firm of about 11 people, so small enough to care, and we have been about for over 100 years. We have a wide range of clients etc.

Like i have said before, dont just specifically choose me, as i am not trying to sell myself, i am merely passing on some good common sense. I would ring round and ask where accountants get their new clients from. ie yellow pages or word of mouth.

Please do not take this as an advertisement of my firm, but here is our web page Click here excuse the poor quality but one of the bosses sons did it in his spare time, and i have not got round to changing it. It also proves that we do not actively advertise.

edit to say

christ just looked at our website for 1st time in ages and a few details have been lost. it was done about 2 years ago. i have even less air now. Photos are crap i know.
