Foglight abuse
#1
Can someone explain this for me...
Okay, so driving lights are big and bright and come on with main beam.
Why are so many people driving about with their foglights on? It seems incredibly popular since about the beginning of this year. Surely it's not only un-necessary, but potentially dangerous (as they aren't checked for alignment during the MOT)?
Whywhywhywhy?

How else are they gonna advertise that they are lacking 'downstairs'?
***** me off big time, I always give them full beam (& leave it on) if flicking my fogs on/off doesn't do the trick. Then they get annoyed coz they get dazzled! ironic ey!

The only time i put them on with main/dipped beam is down lanes at nite. It lights up the sides and any potholes a treat. Also helps avoid wildlife. I do try to turn them off if someone comes the other way.
However i have been known to accidentally leave them on once hitting urban roads and then wonder why ppl flashed. Then i noticed they were on and so could turn them off. So a quick flash is useful. However blinding is not as i think 9/10 you'll get full beam back if they MEANT to have fogs on.
I have mine pointed at the floor and across to sides of road (as they should be) but I think nearly all Peugeots have them ligned up wrong cos they burn ya retina out!!!

You cant own an MY01 then, as you need them on to see where you are going in the dark.
And believe me, the MY01 fog-lights would not dazzle you, even if I shut you in a dark room and shone the directly in your eyes!

Just out of curiosity what is the difference between driving with your fog lights on and those fecking great PIAA things that you lot fit to your RB5s and other things? call me naive but to me they look exactly like the round fog light I have on my MY00 ???(which incidentally are covered up and never get used)

generally i agree here - but i would say that they are not just for fog... i tend to stick mine on when there's a really heavy downpour on the motorway and visibility is well down on the norm...
but in fine daylight, or just before lights on time - v sad.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I thought the PIAA lamps are driving lamps... ie lamps to turn night to day down country roads when the headlights just don't cut it, which lets face it on Scoobies is all the time.
Fog lamps are just that, lights for driving in fog to cast a puddle of light at low level in front of the car.

It winds me up no end too, plenty of t@ssers round here drive with:
Side lights and Foglights on (Fog lights usually pointing in all directions) - just before it gets dark, usually BMW drivers.
Or Once its dark they all come out with their dips and fogs on >
Blinding everyone they can see, so I blast them with my Morettes & Driving lights esp if they come towards me and have their lights all over the place cos they are too stupid to line them up correctly.

fog lamps = 55W
Driving lamps = 120W + and arn't called daylighters for nothing
only downside to them is the fact that you can blind yourself with the reflection from road signs.

Cant say I even notice on most cars to be honest. Far more annoying is people who take ages to or dont even bother turning off their main beam when u meet on the empty roads in the middle of the night.
Most fog lights arent even that bright so it doesnt make that much diff IMHO unless youve got bad eyes. In fact the ones on my MY00 turbo arent at all bright however I only use them in conjuction with my main beam.

...the only reason to look forward to winter is to be able to uncover the PIAAs for that nice cross-country drive to and from work. Lovely.
Of course, the other use of them is to melt the paint off the rear bumper of that car that just pulled out straight in front of you

what's wrong with sidelights on before lighting up time?
I've found that quite often the streetlamps don't come on even though the weather has turned quite overcast. Some silver cars are very difficult to see at this time - I would prefer to be seen and not hit. Fog lamps however shouldn't be used unless visibility is poor (and again in downpours and high motorway spray count here imho)

i thought it was illegal to use foglights unless visibility is significantly reduced due to rain/fog/mist etc.
You never see the police do anything about it though do you? yet you go over 40 on a dual carriageway at 2am and they'll ticket you.

It's illegal to use them unless foggy or in extreme situations. I had mine on once (by accident) and was pulled over in a BAD area of Leeds. They just said turn 'em off and then checked me out cos of my car!
They can do you and 3 points are possible though.

We had them on yesterday Must have knocked them on by accident, only noticed when we were pulling out a junction with a window opposite Luckily it was the bloke driving (for a change!) so I didn't look like a muppet! Much **** taking ensued...
