Hello,

I am being moved for my company to the UK, specifically London - however, due to the sillyness of people involved - I'm left to fend for myself in the housing area by myself.

Any suggestions from anyone in regards to where I should go/avoid?

I will be staying for a year and half.

Also, are there any subaru junkyards/pull yards anywhere within an hour of London? Would be nice to bring some stuff home, or send it

All depends on your budget - anywhere in London is going to be expensive

Whereabouts will you be based and how far are you prepared to travel on a daily basis?

You best bet is to start looking at a few residential letting agencies like this or this.

Cost wise, you would be looking at a minimum of £250 a week for a furnished 2 bedroom flat (plus bills) - Prices do vary considerably, so a lot depends on where you will be working. If you are prepared to commute on our wonderful public transport system, then do consider coming out of central London, as you'll get more choice and cheaper prices.

Scooby wise - you can visit Scoobysport, based in Essex for lots of shiny bits for your car

Remember to pack plenty of steaks (ours are dodgy) and bring plenty of the funny liquid we call Petrol - ours is very special and expensive since we have to ferment it from fava beans and juniper berries.

I'll be working in central london, but don't mind commuting in...

From what I've been able to figure out - somewhere in the zone 5/6 should be safe enough and far enough for costs/time.

Hmm.. I'll see if I can bring any meat over.. though, I'll probably have to save that for a "supply run" when I go home for a weekend visit in october.. but dont they have customs issues for that kind of thing?

Unfortunately, I highly doubt they'll let me bring any petrol over - especiall on the plane - as i'm sure that'll automatically mark me as a terrorist in these times...

Any areas out of central london I should avoid like the plague?

It all depends on where you will be working. Is it the city? I will presume it is. You have 2 choices, if you want to live in zone 5/6+ then you can get on the underground. If you want to live further out then you can use the national rail lines which take you straight in to london, then use the underground (similar commuting times, but more expensive.)

If you want to live in London, somewhere popular, then look around the Northern line from Camden outwards. Prices are expensive.
If you want somewhere cheaper then go west from there along the metropolitan line starting from Harrow outwards.

If you choose to live outside London and commute in then pick any town with a train station, you can really live anywhere and it will take you about 1hr to get to work in the morning.

Are you looking at getting new parts or old parts for your scooby? If you don't mind travelling or paying for P&P you can try the various breakers around the country, but it is hit and miss as to whether they have something in for you at the time.

Why not try Essex or Hertfordshire. Essex is good if you are working in the city and prices will be less expensive. Plus, you get to see lots of pretty girls

Yeah Essex is OK - I moved there from another part of the UK.

With my train service I can get to most of London within an hour.

Victor why don't you tell us what you want to do and we can tell you where to go (in the politest sense!)?

E.g. Where you'll be working
What sort of place you want (1 bed flat, 4 bed mansion etc)
How long you'd be prepared to commute
How much you want to spend on your commute
How lousy a commute you want (i.e. do you expect to sit....)

I would love to goto the breaker yards! Are there any close by to London?!??!? That's part of the fun - going to those yards!

As for me - I'll be working in Hendon (If memory serves it has a postal code of NW4), don't mind commuting to about an hour - all i really need is a 1bed flat.. but dont mind sharing, or getting something slightly larger (i.e. house or flat share). Don't need parking as I do not intend on having a car (unless company gets off their azz's and actually does give me the funding - but would be insane in london anyway), and i guess somewhere round 500-600 a month, as I'm still trying to figure out how i'm going to get paid (i.e. from UK or US, and how messy that's going to be).

Where is Essex relative to London?

Seem to be a reasonable amount for the sort of money you are looking at. It's a buyers(or renter's) market , so be prepared to haggle if the rent's coming out of your own pocket.

Once you have found an area you are thinking of living in, enter the postcode at this site http://www.upmystreet.com/
and it will give you an idea of the local crime rate, transport links, property prices etc.

East Finchley's OK. Fairly cheap to rent and not heavy on crime. Always go for North or West London if you can afford it. South London in the main is over-crowded, dirty and not a place to enjoy any car, and East London isn't overly nice!

i live in bucks, just near amersham, and i can be in central london in 30 mins. i'm on the end of the met line and can take a fast train which stops at about 4 or 5 stations and goes straight to marlebone (sp?).

its in a very low crime rate area, where i live is actually in the countryside, and we don't have any hoodie wearing drug dealing scum walking the streets at night round here.

just to add, the roads round here are amazing, lots of nice country lanes

anyone know about NW2 in london? any good? scary? alarming? SHould I be scared?

Also, here's a silly q - what should I expect to pay for basic utilities and what not on an average single flat?

I live down the road from Hendon and you have a breakers right on your "new" doorstep in Colindeep Lane, I only ever saw one scoob in there, the place is usually full of nissan Micra's.

Hendon is not a bad area to rent in and has good access to Central London and you have Brent X shopping centre there as well, AKA shopping Mall
