Question

You know - the semi humorous ones - washing the Rav4, looking at the Yaris through the window etc

Why do all the cars have odd numberplates - three numbers and three letters IIRC

What's odd about 3 numbers and 3 letters? Or aren't you old enough to remember them My third car was 300CLJ (1071cc Cooper S).

Seriously, I'm sure I've heard there is some agreement or "advertising standard" whereby manufacturers have to use plates which give no indication of age. Could be wrong of course.

If you ever see a Rover advert you'll see that the number plates used in them are able to mirror imaged/flipped and they are still able to be read, they use regs like xmw818 which can be flipped and it will read 818wmx. Others use non-dating reg plates for the simple reason they avoid having to update the reg everytime we get a new registration out. I'm sure the Toyota adverts will still be showing after Sept 1st, if they had 02 plates then they would need 52 plates to look brand new.

The 'flipping' thing is for LHD/RHD obviously. Which is also why some manufacturers' adverts have their cars with blacked-out windows, so you can't see on which side the steering wheel is.

I think the flipping thing is to do with using stills and printing them back to front if the photo looks better that way. Used a lot in "girly" mags, ..........or so I'm told !!!!
