Question

Following on from the threads yesterday about the EU directives for motor insurance, I started reading the proposal PDF document

In it, it mentions that previous directives "ensured that victims of accidents caused by unidentified or uninsured vehicles would be compensated through the establishment of compensation bodies (guarantee funds) in all Member States;"

I'd never come across anything like that in the UK, so do they exist?

There is a 'slush fund' for where victims of uninsured drivers can claim from. It takes ages and the payouts are small

I think this is the same fund you have to pay to to claim from drivers of another country. Costs £300 which you don't get back. Actually, you can get it back, but I was told it would be 25p a week or something

In the UK, that's covered by the Motors Insurance Bureau. It's a slush fund that all the insurers pay into, then it pays out in the event of someone having to claim off an uninsured driver.

Of course, that means that it's a part of our premiums that go into the slush fund to cover people who are uninsured

If a person gets paid from the "slush fund" the uninsured driver is pursued for costs and must pay at least 50% of the actual pay out, I beleive.
