Good breeders use a huge amount of genetics to BETTER a breed ! It is the 'backstreet breeders' that fudge everything up with poor selections in stud or using a bitch that shouldn't be bred with.
We bought a boxer pup from a 'bad' breeder a while ago( a moment of weakness after much research). They claimed to be great breeders who had run a part of Scottish Boxer Rescue but had to give it up due to a family illness however after a little research we found they were breeding with the rescue dogs(not knowing medical or temprament backgrounds) and were made to give it up by the boxer club. The result was our pup dropping dead due to a HUGE heat problem (aortic stynosis) whch is common in Boxers while out for a walk with my girlfriend. These 'puppy farmers'are prolonging this problem within the breed.
I pick up my new pup tomorrow and he looks like he is going to be a cracker! My girlfriend wants to show him which I do not see as a big deal(other than the extra miles on the car ) as long as he is still a family pet. If you are showing a dog, then in my eyes you are REALLY looking after the dog as they must be in tip-top condition (food, coat, excercise)
My 2 dogs Chyna (the big'un) Kobi (the pup)

Unfortunately god (if u believe in such things) probably had very little to do with it. Most of the weird and whacky breeds have been cross bred or genetically changed to look the way they do. So blame the scientists

It's true - breeders cross-breed pairs of dogs to exaggerate their 'features'. So, for example, daschunds are bred to have long mid-sections, and bloodhounds bred to have lond ears and short legs.
It happens with cats, too - Persians are bred to have the most 'squashed up' face possible, as this supposedly wins more shows, regardless of the fact that it can encourage breathing difficulties.
If anyone's seen the tv ad a the moment with the extremely wrinkly dog, this is a classic example - they're bred to have the most folds of skin possible, despite the fact that it can cause all sorts of medical problems for the dog in later life.
Not very nice really.

Ahhh, but you said "blame the scientists" implying all of them, or rather scientists in general. You should have said "blame the scientits who are also breaders".
Anyway, it is the breaders who are responsible, not the scientists..

That's why I don't get this obsession with dog shows, cat shows, etc. and breeding animals just for their looks. To me it smacks of what the ***** were doing with human genetics.
I'm not an animal racist! I love my pets for their personality, NOT what they look like.
(But CARS on the other hand...clear lenses, spoilers, STi pedal set, Autostyle mats...)

I deplore the way dog breeders select animals to breed based on features as the animal itself is usually worse off for it, I myself was bred so certain features are enhanced and it makes it very difficult to breathe properly, ask my wife.......

Thing is there is demand for these cross breeds. How about all those Bengal Cats as shown on every Whiskas, Caesar advert etc. They have long tails that droop like tigers and have longer teeth as well as that lovely coat. Not that Im complaining as Id probably buy one if I was gonna get a cat.

Although more reputable breeders are trying to reduce the defects.
For example with Golden Retrievers, the breading dog and bitch can not be close relations, must have their eyes checked to make sure a known defect is not carried on, have their hips checked and rated (only an animal with a rating below a certain level is allowed to bread), the list goes on.
This is all in an attempt to rectify the problems that were introduced to the bread by generations of stupid breading that caused the eye, hip, heart, etc. problems in the first place!

I think that dog is cute, mind you I think all dogs are cute. It's a pug puppy, wont grow very much more. Its the same Breed as Ethels Little Willie from Eastenders.
I don't agree with the inbreeding though, the best dogs are mongrels, and there are many looking for homes at the RSPCA. I'd rather give one of them a happy home than shell out £400 on a pedigree.

When we picked up our puppy - Border Terrier - we could look at him with his mum and siblings and we were vetted by the breeder. She was quite distant until we explained that we had had another of the breed for 12 years and liked them so much we would like another.
Mongrels often live longer, too.

I agree with most of the above. There's loads of horrible medical issues seen every day at vets which are caused entirely by interbreeding in an attempt to produce more aesthetically attractive animals. My feeling is that if people want something "nice to look at" buy a vase!!! If you want an animal on the other hand give a stray or rescue animal a home, they are just as nice (often nicer) and you will feel good about doing it. Spending hundreds (sometimes thousands) on an animal purely because of the way it looks is a bit sick really. Do you agree?
