I can recommend Oakdale Golf Club at Harrogate (which is almost exactly half way between Guildford and Muirfield). See http://www.harrogate-oakdale-golfclub.co.uk/ Also, it's not far from Masham where the Theakstons brews are made if you need something to while away the evening ....
And on that subject, The Boar's Head at Ripley - see http://www.boarsheadripley.co.uk/ is my preferred place to stay around there. Great food, good pub atmosphere and very comfortable accommodation. You could do a lot worse ....

A mate is going up to the Open at Muirfield in a couple of weeks' time. He's driving up from Guildford, and fancies stopping somewhere to split the journey, and possibly getting a round in whilst he's there.
Any suggestions for decent courses about midway that'd make a good stopover?

Yep, but it's not for me. Frankly, I can't understand why anyone would want to go all that way to watch the golf when the TV coverage is better. But each to their own.
