Moving slower in the heat works for me

Together with a dip in the sea at the end of the road 😀

Yeah, this heatwave is a killer, just had to turn my fan on to level 3 of 10. Don't think I'll see the week out at this rate

Pretty certain in parts of the UK on the London commuter belt it will briefly reach 40+ (before dropping again). For the rest of us it's low 30's

32 here. Trying to keep house cool by shutting off the rooms that suffer with solar gain from the rest of house and keeping windows/doors shut whilst the internal temp is lower than exterior (about 25...which I can cope with), then opening it all up a night once temps have dropped. And hoping the concrete floor doesn't get warm, otherwise I'll never get cool over night.

I used to do this in Spain...no air con. Concrete building, 35degrees most days but could get the interior down to 24 degrees at night with use of fans in windows at night and keeping it all shut up during the day etc.

Guardian/wokists are have a meltdown over it being too hot for maybe a single week in the entire year for what Spain gets for the entire summer!

BTW: Current workshop temperature:

Meh!

Try checking the ignition timing of a Jag V12 in those temps (timing marks underneath, checked at full engine temp at 3000rpm).

I would happily identify as a Guardian/wokist (never really understood why being called awake is somehow supposed to be an insult) and am definitely not having a meltdown! For me those temperatures are absolutely normal throughout the summer and -15C in the Winter is also pretty normal. I do find it very amusing though how Brits complain about a short warm spell, then book their holidays in Spain during the warmest month of the year

This. We go on holiday to hot climates so why does the country need to shut down. It is more the advice being given not to go out by met office or government or whoever it is that is nonsense.

I can understand people in blocks of flats in London or other built up areas complaining about the heat, they are probably better off going out and finding some shade. Or spend the day in the freezer isle at a supermarket.

I was aiming at their opinion columns along with the comments sections. Which to be frank can be laughably self righteous. Where clearly those making comment aren't as worldly as they claim, I'm guessing that's what woke is, I'm just using the term because it's cool with the kids.

I read the Guardian too, but well aware of the skew it can take on certain issues to grab our attention and pour scorn on those they feel are responsible. So yeah, there's commentary moaning about the British weather and its "our" fault (basically, human race). For example; https://www.theguardian.com/commenti...xtreme-weather

As you, for me it's no biggy as I'm used to it; I've been working in hotter weather in Spain whilst re-tiling swimming pools, so no chance of a dip to cool down, and my digs had no air con; I remember talking to a couple at the airport on a trip back to the UK and they were in total disbelief that I could survive the heat without aircon (whilst they hypocritically expect waiters to serve them alfresco food cooked in a kitchen hotter than hell).

I will say that the limits for me are when the water supply fails for a week...then things get whiffy, well, everything gets whiffy.

Talking of which, the power has gone down at home and it looks like the outages has killed the booster pumps for the water as I just had a text from Severn Trent telling to expect a limited or loss of supply. Marvellous.

My gran and uncle lived in low rise flats that seemed to be more thermally stable than my own house at the time. They were mostly concrete with concrete brick internal walls, and concrete floors so lots of thermal mass to retain heat or cold depending on season.

Now Dorma bungalows on the other hand. Christ on a bike the upstairs in a 80's built one of those is basically like a North Korean sweat box; Black roof so massive solar gain, mostly timber framing so no thermal mass and poor insulation. I could literally feel the sun's rays radiating heat through the apex ceiling at my old house.

Uh oh, we have a casualty. My UPS (backup for phone/internet/cctv etc). has overheated. Probably the power cut it earlier pushed to its edge.

Now its constantly beeping

My fault for not leaving enough clearance round it, but now I've sorted it, the bleeding thing won't shut up.

hello mate

So its a bit like radiators....the room size determines your spec.
we have 2 units in our large 3 bed detached,1 upstairs in the master bedroom and 1 downstairs in the living/dining room.

we paid £2450 for both fully installed with a 7 year guarantee (the guarantee is providing you have the units serviced every 12 months @ £60 per unit). I believe the downstairs one on its own was around £1400 and the upstairs one was about £1200 on its own.

they never need re-gassing and they can also heat your house aswell (say for example you just want your living room warming up just put it on heat mode)

really efficient to run,I've not noticed a massive increase in my leccy bill since I had them fitted 2 years ago.
honestly it's the best thing I've ever had done.
downsides are the outside units look a little industrial but all we are going to do now the patio is done is build some trellis work in front of it with a planter to hide it.

I cannot stand being hot/warm I honestly would prefer it to be -10 every day so they were a no brainer for me, if its just night time your struggling with then perhaps just a bedroom one will be sufficient for you.
our upstairs one cools the whole of upstairs and the same for the downstairs unit.
they are not noisy or smelly in any way, hopefully adds value to our house and makes it more desirable.

this is the company I used (irrelevant for you but gives you an idea)

https://www.leicesteraircon.co.uk/

Hope this helps mate

Couldn’t this be done with reverse cycle ground source heat pump

i suppose it would all be loads more expensive

My heating system can pump cold water through the underfloor heating system for cooling then reclaims the heat energy to heat the hot water tank.

With outside shading on all windows though, the house is a comfortable 25C with mid 30's outside, so I never actually use the cooling system.
