Default Breakdown cover

Guys

Who provides the best breakdown cover. RAC seem to do decent cover,(European comprehensive plus) but have mileage clauses all over the shop

I'm with the RAC, and only ever called them out once. Never an issue for me.

What I've found, is the AA & Green flag, use local garages to be sent out to your location, rather than their own patrols. It's like that where I live, but may be different elsewhere.

I see loads of RAC vans, but AA vans are a rare sight.

check with your bank as well, i get it through mine and its way way cheaper than going to them direct.

Also works well, been recovered on a trailer from isle of man back to garage of my choice in derbyshire before.

Good call, but they don't provide breakdown cover.
Its just that RAC talk about towing you for 10 miles, then its chargeable per mile there after.

I have Autoaid and can't fault them in terms of value for money or service.

Ditto. Been with them for 5 years now - they cover the driver not the car. Also a hell of a lot cheaper than the big names and do the same job but without all the jazz. Had to call on them a couple of times for breakdowns. No issues whatsoever. Definitely recommend !

Autoaid here as well.

Other half has a Nationwide account which costs £12 a month IIRC, and includes high interest savings (5% per year), mobile phone insurance and full Europe breakdown cover in any vehicle - as long as she's in it, we're covered.

And they've changed the way they do stuff now as well - used to be you ring them and they sort out a recovery agent who you paid and then reclaimed, but now Autoaid sort all that out, so you don't have to spend a bean if you're unfortunate enough to break down

Have have you had to be recovered by them?
No clauses about distance etc?

Do they just offer the same level of service then as say the RAC?

the 10 mile clause was only if you get recovered to home the night before rather than straight to the garage.

AKA they will only take you 10 miles away from your home if you were recovered to home previously.

If you are broken down at home in the first instance they will still take you to wherever.

At least thats how it works with mine.

I'm with the RAC and they rescued me when my daily driver broke down in the middle of nowhere in the winter, then carried me and car home, 150 miles on an RAC rescue truck. My earlier experience with Green Flag convinced me that they were a poor option.

Excellent, that's what I wanted to hear about - some trip that.
I need European cover also you see, due to the NI/ROI border (oh no, not the border again)

I got recovered from the isle of man by green flag, local bod on the island cos they don't have any units there, but then picked up at the docs by green flag liverpool side and taken up to clinic. Couldn't fault there service.

Only cost was to me for ferry because i changed my travel day, but that was by choice rather than hang around the island with no car.

On the RAC website, what do you make of this

Roadside Rescue is included as standard, If your vehicle breaks down ¼ mile away from home, we’ll fix it. And if we can’t, we’ll tow you 10 miles.

Had to have the Forester recovered last year as the bottom end went (yes, on a 2.0 Forester X!!!) ... they recovered my wife and the car from Derby back to our home address which is a good 20 miles. We then had the car transported to our preferred garage a day or two later (in order to have the engine replaced) and were able to claim back the transportation costs.

They use local firms for recovery but the service we received for the annual fee of £43 was second to none and spouses are also covered on the same policy. They will also cover caravans and small trailers but I'm not sure about European Cover (but I've never required this so not concerned about it).

We've also had the wife's Kia Rio recovered from our home address to our preferred garage due to the clutch failing and we were able to claim back the transportation costs on that.

I was also unfortunate enough to be caught by the rotting wishbones on my Bugeye impreza in 2014 and they were happy enough to transport my car to Europa Subaru in Sheffield where I got the wishbones replaced under the recall notice. Again I was able to claim back the transportation costs.

RAC it is. Rang them up over the wording and its all nice and clear now.
So with this package, they tow you the 10 miles, then the national recovery kicks in and takes you where you really need to go.
Same with the at home bit

Winter Complete
Personal cover
Cover for you in any vehicle.

Roadside Rescue
If your vehicle breaks down at the roadside, we’ll fix it or tow you up to 10 miles.

At Home - FREE
If your vehicle breaks down at home, we’ll fix it or tow you up to 10 miles.

National Recovery
If we can’t fix your vehicle, we’ll take you, up to 8 passengers and your vehicle anywhere in the UK, as long as you're over ¼ mile away from home.

Replacement Hire Car
If we can’t get your vehicle repaired the same day, we'll provide either a hire car (up to 3 days), 1 night bed and breakfast or alternative transport.

Key Replace - FREE
£1500 towards replacement locks and keys, if they're lost, stolen or broken and we will reset your immobiliser and alarm.
