Just had a quote to install this in our area from BT.

They need to put in a cabinet for our estate for Fibre Broadband and have quoted £6,641.00 - works out about £100 for each house wanting to do it.

Is this about right for the price or are their cheaper companies out there (Sky, Virgin)?

Any experiences of such things?

I would have thought if you play the three companies off against each other, one will do it for free if 66 houses sign up a 12 month contract.

Ours was put in on behalf of ntl, now Virgin, by Diamond Cable.

We paid nothing. But given how much I've paid in line rental in the 15 years I've had the service, they got a fukcing GREAT deal

That's nothing we have been quoted £84,000 to put fibre cabinet in our village. 1mile from nearest fibre cabinet but with crap copper/aluminium underground which reacts with rain and weather.

Happy to be corrected, but as far as I know, BT (Openreach) and Virgin are the only 2 companies that provide such infrastructure (satellite may be a possibility but costly - that's a guess) - Sky being a reseller using Openreach equipment.

With regards to the cost, this would depend on where current fibre infrastructure is located and the distance / equipment required to provide service. The cost would be broken down as £x per metre of fibre, £x per metre of duct, cabinets, joint boxes, engineering resources etc. and would be a standard cost country wide rather than a finger in the air and it costs more because you asked on a Tuesday...

You could approach Virgin if they are in the area, but if not, it's Openreach or Satellite.

Aluminium cable was used quite extensively in the 1980's as it was cheaper than copper and was fine for voice traffic. Any aluminium in a u/g cable run (even 100m worth) has a huge impact on broadband speed.

I have satellite internet in France.
Once you have the hardware (€320), and have set it up, (easy enough), mine is €9/month.

That's with a limit of 3Gb downloads and 20Mb/s speed.
Increasing the limit to 20Gb puts the price up to €30/month.
