I have foot wound which is slow to heal and hospital want me to have a plaster on lower leg to give wound less stress.


I have never had such a thing and wonder how restrictive it will be on general movement eg walking around. Would I need to use crutches perhaps? And what about stairs?


I understand they are a lighter weight than the old Plaster of Paris jobs but anyone with experience of these things? Note I am past the first flush of youth so not as sprightly as I used to be.

What wound is it? A fracture? Cut?.....

A diabetic foot ulcer with some infection on surface. Danger is stress on foot bones which need support until wound is healed and a supportive shoe fitted.

Diabetic foot is no laughing matter (as I am sure you will be aware). Very important to have as little weight on it as possible. Get the cast on it.

Stairs etc will be no real issue unless you have spiral stair case or something.

The most frustrating thing about wearing a cast anywhere is if you get an itch under it. Other than that they're pretty easy to get used to.

Absolutely. Invest in a knitting needle, or chop sticks

I had hip to ankle plaster about 7 years ago after knee surgery. A bugger to get around, an absolute nightmare to have a **** as you need a stool (pardon the pun) to have your leg raised on (remember, no knee bend) and hell on earth taking a shower (bin bag and clingfilm around the plaster to keep it dry).

If I was in your position I would get the cast on, less stress on the wound area. Not worth taking any risks in my opinion

I think they use something called Polymorph.
