I doubt this will deter the other helmets out there much

"This also sends a message out to drivers who think they can get away with it that the police are clamping down.”
One prosecution in 2 years that the law has been in force. Hardly a revolution is it.

On many of our motorways the inside lane is heavily indented by years of heavy lorry traffic, making on-off camber steer an annoying problem. For this reason I sometimes drive down the middle lane, but then I don't crawl along in the way while I'm doing it.

Agreed...and on heavily used motorways, the inside lane is a bind with traffic joining every few miles...and NOT giving way to traffic on the motorway, despite lane markings, you are expected to get out of THEIR way, the nett effect being that the outside lane backs up as everyone moves over. Traffic on the motorway gives way to traffic joining? In the UK, yes!
It's time they got on top of that too. Try it in France, but get ready for an accident if you do!

And how about fines for the gantry speed limit operators who left on a 50 mph restriction on the M11 at midnight for 4 miles when the road was completely clear? What about them? They are equally incompetent

Yep, cuts both ways.
Don't see any difference between hold ups caused by middle lane hoggers and numpty sign operators

Also agreed.....travelled along the A1(M) from Peterborough to Alconbury and two weeks later, the reverse journey, both at around 10pm.

I was surprised to find the gantries saying "Queue, Caution, 50", then the same with 40, twice and finally "End" with no sign of a queue and light traffic on both occasions. Yes, they need fining.

One of the major differences between our motorway system and the French system, is that they often have 30, 40, even 50k between junctions

We seem to have junction every 10k or so, sometimes more
