First weekly food shop... at ASDA....
I never thought I'd be saying this but it was a rather positive experience . We do all our shopping at Tesco's and a few months ago we tried our weekly shop at Aldi which in our opinion it didn't seem much different (defiantly not worth the hype) plus we had the hassle of having to go back to Tesco to pick up a few things that Aldi don't stock.
Anyway, ASDA twice the size of our Tesco store so a lot more variety, the people weren't as "rough" as I thought they would be (sorry ) and most importantly we estimate the weekly shop was about £5-7 cheaper. I swear it would have been pushing £75 at Tesco but it was £65 here. Ok, so their fruit and veg section was a bit of a bomb site compared to the neatly arranged section at Tesco but after spending a couple minutes extra to work out what was what and sifting through the wrong items chucked on top, I figured out what produce I wanted in the end.
We'll be back next week and will probably see how it goes for a month to work out an average....

Sherratt, you're so domesticated now, young chap!
Not an Asda fan here regardless of its spaciousness. I prefer Tesco to it. I do frequent Aldi as well for its cheapness, although it remains a jumble sale as ever. I don't do pre-packed processed foods usually, but I've recently tried their steam cooked pre-packed Chicken Tandoori with rice for £1.49p. Not as good as Waitrose fresh meal for work lunch,, but it wasn't bad, although Germans will call anything Indian as long as it has curry power in it. It wasn't Tandoori Chicken at all.
So, yes, Asda doesn't get my vote. I feel unfamiliar to the layout and everything there, kinda lost. Glad it suited you, though.

Used to go asda only cos it was nearest , ten years ago. Been back there a couple times since and it's more chav cash an carry than ever , half as many again isles as before everything stacked on cheap looking shelves . They've probably got more choice now but I wouldn't make a day out of it

My GF does the the Aldi or Lidl thing. I've looked at using them before but their cheap brand stuff isn't that much cheaper (if at all) then the Tesco own brand stuff.
I'm sure there are savings but I also think it's what you buy for your needs and whether you buy brands as apposed to either own brand or the Aldi or Lidl brands.
One area I do think the Alidi/Lidl shops are cheaper is things like cooked meats - say if you were doing an antipasta then they are usually alot cheaper. I noticed the Aldi Granola was much cheaper than Tesco. But then the Aldi weetabix and tesco weetabix were about the same.

heres my Take
Morrisons is poor. fruit and veg dates are low and they don't last long
Tesco is a rip off the dearest by far of all the big vendors
Asda very cheap and prob one of the better ones
Sainsburys very good and middle of the rd
For me its
Sainsburys
Asda
Ocado for online
ALDI is bar far the cheapest but its for necessities no fun stuff, i can fill a trolly at Aldi for 80 quid Asda would have been 160 quid

my wife has noticed that food from or first lidl/aldi shop has not lasted as well!!
so the packs of Pitta bread are a bit mouldy - much earlier than would be the case with Tesco/Morrison's et al
I suspect that this is because the major supermarkets have fantastic logistics/supply chain services - hence the food is in the system for a far shorter period of time
I believe that supermarkets work on the basis that the majority of the food is replaced overnight

ha , my experince is the reverse . Lidl pitta last way longer than Morrisons
if you dont put Morrisons in the fridge more less straight away theyll be mouldy very soon
Also the buggers cut corners by inserting a half sized specimens in between longer ones , hoping you wont notice
Still , 10 minutes in the car to fetch few pitta over 2 minutes walk to Morrisons doesnt make sense

I am indeed! Growing up and all that .
Yes finally got it sorted after a huge ball ache! I can't remember exactly how much credit I got put onto my account but I think it was around £120 (£30 for each month service was delayed) plus I got my money back on the twin phones as a "good will gesture".
Thanks, I never knew you could do that but I've binned the receipt now. Will check next week though. I'm always suspicious of that thing at the bottom of the receipt which supposedly tells you how much you have saved. I'm not sure exactly how supermarkets work it out but my guess is they only compare identical branded products? With variety, I may not choose an identical branded product at another store and instead I may chose an own brand cheaper product?
