Default Devolution for UK cities...what of the rest of us?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-32726171

How will THIS affect the "rest of" the UK, especially the not-so-well-off North?

How do you think?

Welcome to the Republic of London and the South East..... the rest of the UK is now deemed the Badlands and you shouldn't go there

Presumably the lie will be that the wealth/opportunities will spread outwards from these new powerhouses

I can see Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle and MAYBE one or two more getting extra money up here.

And we don't need to guess who will be the losers, do we?

Seriously, what do you actually want? Devolved powers for townships? villages maybe? How about hamlets and farmsteads? You can only go so far.

Sounds good, how about devolved to my road. None of us have kids so no child benefit or education required. Two of us have decent cars so no tax on petrol.... I am liking this plan!

I did contemplate suggesting that, then I realised how excitable people would get over the concept.

The problem I see is that the more you devolve money and responsibilities, the more likely you are to end up with some fruit cake(s) running the show. Some of the nut jobs you see in parish councils and less so in local authorities should not be given the time of day, never mind the ability to decide how much gets spent on what.

More fat-cat local city councillor snouts at the trough wasting public money and milking the system. Think main government is bad...local government will be even worse.

I like the principal of devolved cities, similar to that of the USA with their county/state/federal split system. But as often demonstrated localised government is even more corrupt and inefficient than the federal one. Its a good idea...if people put in charge were honest, have a well aligned moral compass and were competent at their jobs, but we know that doesn't exist in politics.

How about devolved REGIONS?

I note no-one has proposed that Edinburgh/Glasgow get devolved power....but Scotland has it.

Why not Yorks and Humber?

Edinburgh, Glasgow & Aberdeen don't need it.

Don't worry Jeff, you can always come and live in Scotland when London cuts you loose

Yay...can't happen soon enough, sick and tired of seeing London and the SE get everything, I'd rather subsidise the Sweaties, .....sorry, Jocks, ....sorry our Scottish friends.

^^^ Sadly, this is all too true.

Our local Tory council leader is known to most of us as Mad Lizzie.
The previous (tory) guy was lucky not to go down for flouting laws on waste disposal.
