800 Migrants Dead
Just wondered why this doesn't much airtime on here?
Seems there is very little empathy for these victims. Yet we readily mourn some victims of an air crash in the developed world....especially if it has some British victims.

It's because they are 'migrants' and therefore a threat to our way of life!

Empathy aside, I don't really see the comparison with getting on board a A320 - could have been any of us - versus getting on board a couple of planks of wood and hoping for the best across the Med.

Considering there is a General Election coming up in the next few weeks, I see plenty of stories in the papers and TV of the plight of these migrants. Equally whilst the recent air accidents also hit the headlines were tragic, I wasn't "mourning" the loss of lives, **** happens.

Illegal immigration is a topic been discussed over and over many times on this forum. The migrants on boats are just evidence that its happening.
Nobody (well, mostly) wants to see them dead. Equally as much nobody want to advisertise that we'll help and provide for them.
My apathy went up a notch when I read the report of immigrants throwing others overboard to drown and die becuase they were Christian.
Various humanitarian bodies make all their morally correct words and demands, but very few put up the funds required. Its easy to criticise when its not your problem or your money.
I say just aquisition a few old ferries, some fast patrol boats on the boarders of international waters. Scoop them up, scuttle their boats and load them on the ferries and send them back. Then send the bill to the humanitarian aid charities for the costs incurred by "saving" them from drowning.

Kind of 'reduce supply, increase demand'

The current Government pulled its support and funding to Italy's "Mare Nostrum" last year because they said it encouraged migrants to make the trip across the Med. Well, they're still trying to come across, only many more are dying trying.

A non-sequitor. The UK pulling out did not stop Mare Nostrum from continuing, so has no impact on the numbers trying to cross the med.

That wasn't what I was trying to imply, merely that the Government's policy of pulling support and funding in a bid to discourage the migrants also failed in it's purpose. Of course there were other EU countries that stopped their support.

South Africa has been a case example. Been there myself, squat camps the size of a city as far as teh eye can see in every direction off the main road out of Durban, mostly immigrants from the surrounding countries.
The same started happening in Calais as well as other illegal immigrant "landing" hotspots.
Its a sad sight, and not one that I'd like to encourage to start happening here.

It's a difficult position this as so long as there is a reason to come to the Eu then they will keep coming, and they will keep dying in the process. Shipping them back would reduce the number of deaths as less would try, but then you've got the issues of human rights lawyers milking their cases and the fact in many cases you don't even know where they've come from so which country do you return them to?
The numbers coming are vast and it's yet more people claiming on the welfare states of Eu countries which as confirmed only today are the most in debted they've ever been.
Don't really know what the solution to this one is. Maybe target the smugglers or stop the boats as they're setting off, but it's a massive shoreline.

I agree the intervention of western countries in places like Libya and Iraq has created more instability (although you could hardy say they were in a good position before).
What do you suggest is a solution then, just keep collecting them and re homing in Eu countries for as long as they keep coming?

The Aussies have the right idea. Ship them off to an island somewhere remote and sink the ships they came in or return them to Libya etc.
I'm sure Greece has an island they'd be willing to sell which the refugees/illegalimmigrants could be taken to.
There needs to be better distinction between genuine refugees and those who can afford to pay the fare to be trafficked.
