for those interested, radar data below
Radar data suggest the aircraft had reached FL380 about 3minutes prior to leaving FL380 and descended from FL380 through FL110 in 8 minutes (average rate of descent 3375 fpm). The aircraft appeared to have levelled off at FL068 for one minute while on a northeasterly heading of 26 degrees true, mountains rise up to 8900 feet about 1nm north of the last reported aircraft position.

Apparently distress call was sent, but i don't think the detail of that have been released.

^ no distress call from the aircraft, looks like the ATC raised the distress call when they lost contact with the aircraft.
A320 does have a good safety record, I'm more concerned about the whole control system used by all the Airbus aircraft.
PPRUNE is the place for the latest developments.

I'm at a loss with the response by the French authorities. Been watching the live coverage and it's all footage of a lot of people milling about, lots of parked up helicopters and fire crews not actually doing anything. Why are they not flying to the crash site in a military helicopter even just to get initial rescue teams on the ground there? Why have they not got aerial reconnaissance over the site feeding back images? They have confirmed weather conditions are good so I really don't understand what the big delay is in actually getting to the site.
Typical, just updated their news page:
http://news.sky.com/story/1451536/no...ce-plane-crash
The live press conference didn't confirm this either so they were obviously keeping quiet until they knew what they found.

I fly on the same make aircraft frequently to prague, last trip February was a bumpy one, plus a couple of bangs coming from underneath the floor, was sat couple seats back from the wing.
Its just not good when things like this do happen it rarely ends with survivors.

I fly a fair bit and had a couple of hairy ones recently too, most people on board crapping themselves, I was too busy laughing. non of which come close to landing in Wellington NZ in some 30 seat poxy twin prop jobbie or my flying lesson landing in a Cesna Tomahawk, that WAS ******* scary, cross winded and it really didn't want to go down, never again will I get in a 2 seater match box with an engine.

Saying "another" Airbus is a bit silly. Considering the aircraft's age and its one of the two major commercial aircraft manufacturers: Statistically, its always going to be one or the other, isn't it?
We get Cessnas round here crashing on a monthly basis in the summer! Nobody reports about those, because they crash all the time.
And I could harp on about the 1000,s of 737s that were flying about with tail rudder prone to jamming...crashes caused by the fault led to them all eventually being retrofitted with modifed parts. Think the stats for the 737-200 was around 500,000 hours per crash: The A320 is over 10million hours per crash!!
And don't start me on McDonnell Douglas.....don't forget Boing 717 is a McDonnell Douglas in drag.
The only dodgy Airbus s the A310 which almost on par with the 727-200 (but the A310 still crashes half as much)!
