It was more Tanzania where it all started. The big drought and expansion of the deserts brought on by the ice ages pushed everybody 'out of Africa'

The Sahara massively expanded during the ice age making the central belt of Africa to hot and hostile to live. The seas also dried up allowing land bridges for populations to migrate into.
