Just had that conversation the other day. I am visiting a lot of small companies at the minute and they a all asking me where the recovery is? Yes they are doing OK but only because they are doing 'twice the work for half the money'.

Meanwhile Cameron and Osborne tell us all how great things are!

My mate's a spark and doing exactly the same thing. It's not right! It should be a proper day's pay for a proper day's work!

Who has to do Saturdays as well?

10 hours a day for me....and another 5-6hrs on Saturday (unless the s**t hits the fan, and then it'll be whenever ).

On that note...I'm going to bed!

Oddly,to me, this thread tells me more about what is wrong with society than all the rubbish threads about immigration, religion, benefits, crime etc, etc.

6 on 4 off (2 days, 2 lates, 2 nights then 4 days off)
Days (0700 - 1700) are 10 hours
Lates (1300 - 2300) are 10 hours
Nights (2200 - 0700) are 9 hours

So that 58 hours per set

I'm out for over 10hrs a day. And only get paid for 8.25 by the time they take lunch and half hour travelling each way. But most nights do overtime as the buildings we work in can't be disrupted during working hours.

Also work every saturday and sunday since last may....

I worked 70 hours a week for 17 years when I had my own Buisness
Then 58hours a week when I worked for a national chain Untill it finished
I now work a respectable 37 hours in a week (930-430pm in a job I enjoy and find the less £££ is worth it for the quality of life I have now as I move towards retirement

I don't think things have changed tbh, I have only had 3 jobs that were "fixed" hours, 2 working in factories and 1 in a tool hire firm, the rest has always been 10/12hrs a day and that's over 27yrs. At one point I was working in a bar 3 nights and driving a taxi at weekends too.

Just seems to me like some of you have it quite good, I spent the last 15yrs of my working life getting up at 6am most days (sometimes before) and was doing well if I made it home by 6pm and it wasn't for huge money either, I only started making above £15k for maybe the final 10yrs, I suspect those amongst you working long hours do so for a decent whack.

Work to live, not live to work.

I do the bare minimum 37.5hrs on a 4 day week. (39.5hrs when including the 4 x half hour lunch breaks)

Mon-Wed - 0630-1630
Thurs - 0630-1600

Always out the door right on time, never do over.

With the 4 day week and my leave entitlement, works out at 181 days in work and 184 days off work per year so just slightly better than equal time. Hours worked per year = 1720

Salary wise with that attitude, I really can't complain. Wouldn't change it to be honest, live within your means and enjoy your free time and family life

My line of work in the automotive industry we need to be flexible on hours, if say BMW are going to run out of parts in say a few hours then leaving on say a exact time would not help anyone. Saying that there are people at our company that want their overtime every week but ask them to do 1hr more or 1hr less and they kick off

Continental shift pattern for me,12hr days and 12hr nights.
Mon,tue,wed(days)
thur,fri,sat(off)
sun,mon,tue,wed(nights)
thur,fri,sat,sun,mon,tue,wed(off)
thur,fri,sat(days)
Sun(off)
Then repeat. Loads of time to play in my Scooby
Although I do a fair bit of overtime,especially on nights,this week I'm working Saturday-Friday night,just an 84hr week!

is not 60 per week max allowed?
Thats what M .Thatcher did , kick You in the ***** and you have flexability in contract with which You can do nothing at all.
If you do bailout You cant block company which could Use agency workers and than company will survive long time but You don't.
Contracts are ****e worth nothing, they can change You working time whenever they want with shift pattern, they use terms and conditions to change things like that which dont affect contract in their view.

37.5 here, well 40hrs minus 30 break each day at local Steelworks. Used to try get in 24-28 hrs overtime a month when the missus wasn't working, but now she does, I don't bother

I don't do the live to work thing, what's the point when you have a family?

About 50 hours a week roughly... 8am-5pm give or take an hour or two and I alternate weekends with my Father (he'll work one weekend and I'll do the next etc) but at the weekends it's only about 6 hours total. No travelling though which is a bonus.

70 hours a week! That's insane!

I do 60 hours a week, Monday to Friday, but the time the weekend comes around i'm completely sha*ged! The before i know it, back to work again!

How did we get to this point!?!

When i first started working, 9-5 was the norm, evenings and weekends were times to enjoy life!
