Default One way trip to Mars

In just 10 years and set up a colony.Thought it was a spoof when I first read it on the news!

Why are we as obsessed as Arnie about Mars? did we get bored with visiting our moon too? Surely that would be easier to colonise?

Problem is there isn't a lot of point colonising the moon. That and the fact it's not very interesting, where as sending people to Mars is considerably more interesting and thus easier to get funding for.

Considered putting my name down for the first trip but thought I'd hang on until they'd built a Shell service station, some winding B-roads, high speed internet and a branch of Waitrose.

What's anyone else waiting for?

A very high female to male ratio, supply of beer.. (I'd also have to do the screening for females too, no fatties)

Still got to keep the candidates fit and healthy for the next ten years. So no going out, socialising, yada yada. Would be a lot of investment if the short list happen to cark it.

Good luck to them. I genuinely can't comprehend it. I still find plenty to be humbled by here on good old Earth. If they make it there it'll blow their minds. How do you condition someone for that when it's never been done before.....?

Is that because of the weight?

It's certainly is an interesting subject, I'd love to do but being all safety minded I wouldn't want to go yet, not until it's more common place...

the thought of waiting 10 years to go, travelling for the months needed and then possibly crash landing doesn't fill me with much excitement, most of the people going I guess would be in their late 20s by the time it does go, so the clock for reproducing would be ticking along, no way back....a one way mission....which also makes me wonder if it will be allowed to actually happen after all a one way mission is practically saying you may get there, you may not - I find it hard to believe that it will be allowed because of that reason and because they have no way back.

Can't see why not, there were no guarantees on the original moon missions.

Radio 1 did an interview a few days ago with one of the girls who has applied and who has got through some of screening rounds. I honestly can't see why anyone would want to do it. A one way ticket! You could be stuck there for 20 years! No family, friends, socialising with "normal" people etc. Surely when/if they do eventually come back, they won't be the same person..... Although the girl being interviewed sounded pretty normal, I just couldn't understand why a girl would want to do it. Anyway, she said that she can change her mind and has 10 years to think about it. I would bet you that within those 10 years, she will change her mind, e.g. once she's married, had kids etc. There's no way she will go.

I don't recall them actually being branded as a one way trip...

The fundamental design and intention of the moon landings was to send a man to the moon and then bring him home.

This Mars colony isn't even attempting that, but that doesn't stop it being a valid idea IMO.

We've got access to the technology now to get people to Mars and land them on it, it's getting them off and back home which is the hard part. I think an ISS style project orbiting Mars is the next logical step (arguably makes more sense to do it BEFORE the colony) so that fuel, spares, supplies, etc can be at least sent unmanned for docking with the station, then they can consider moving people in and out of Mars' gravity.

I'd like to see either a Mars colony or even better a generation ship in my lifetime - but not sure I'd ever volunteer for either!

You'd wish you hadn't said that when you get there. The nights are very cold, and of course, you might run out of food..

No sure about that TBH, but in the world we live in today someone somewhere will protest about it and the red tape brigade will kick in H&S this, cannot do that - although they have 10 years to fight it lol.

I don't thinks it's a bad idea just not for me (yet) I would love to go into space but I think I would also like to be able to come home.

I can imagine what'll happen if people fall out when on Mars, it'll be like the BB house without the option to leave....who would police something I mean what about if someone killed someone in an argument and so on...it has many obstacles to overcome.

what i dont understand is why we arent trying it on the moon first? if its so easy to go there why arent we doing it? i seem to remember that they couldnt even get biosphere 2 in the arizona desert to survive for the planned 2 year "mission" and had to pump in oxygen eventually as the plants were dying and the water was getting contaminated. seems strange we cant make it work here on earth but we are apparently planning to go to mars?

Used to love Space 1999.Had the spaceship...

I don't see how the moon would differ from mars.nothing there on both counts and uninhabitable

On the contrary. It is rumoured there was some form of life on Mars at some point in the distant past. There is geological evidence to suggest that water was present on Mars in it's history too. It's atmosphere was thicker in the past so the surface temperature was warmer.

An independent study was done/model run on the current data for the mission and it worked out of they landed safely they would only be able to survive for 68 days.

Yeah sounds a great trip

BTW, Hodgy: nice posting on the 9/11 Con thread. I'd have lost it with those muppets way before page 17!!
