How reliable is the info these give? I have used the Sony Smartband today at work and I know I do a lot of walking as I'm a plaster and im up and down stairs all day in the 3 storey houses but it has said I have done 16.3km or 42,600 steps and that seems a lot?

Depends totally on what it is - the iPhone app ones are okay but pretty vague. Proper GPS watch style things are very good indeed.

It is a proper watch but because it's a band it sends its info to your phone via nfc and you see the stats on your phone

42,600 steps... Or you moved your wrist up and down 42,600 times?

You must have a really short stride. 16.2k in 21,407 steps, 15 flights of stairs. The iPhone has been quite accurate for me.

I bought the wife a fitbit for chrimbo,

you need to set it up for you (stride etc) but if you read the accompanying blurb, they dont work like pedometers, they look for trends, and cycles. so having a crafy pull wont make you superfit for the day.

That said its blown the myth she has about getting no sleep at night..

its reporting she's getting a good 7hrs+ sleep every night, with very short periods of reslesness / awake (duration 7 time 1 min)

Mine is saying about 2.45hrs deep sleep with say 47 minutes of awake and the rest being light sleep.

I think its the only thing that is probably accurate?

I don't think they're a gimmick at all, they'll be ubiquitous within three years in one form or another and we'll all benefit from the data.

I think you might be right, they're already featured in various smartphones. Give a few more years and I think insurance companies will start harvesting the data to work out premiums on life insurance and other lifestyle products.
