Saudi blogger receives first 50 lashes of sentence for 'insulting Islam'.
Of the forty or so world leaders that are waving the freedom of expression banner this afternoon, I wonder how many have 'diplomatic' ties with Saudi Arabia. I used to dismiss this rank hypocrisy as the realpolitik, but find it harder to justify as the years pass.

In short, said leaders court the House of Saud, sell them arms, use their land and waters for military bases and naval fleets and, of course, we buy their oil. All the while The Kingdom pumps its Wahhabi ideology out across the planet.
The thing is, I don't see a solution. We need the oil and the west needs the geo-political advantage that this unholy alliance offers; it's very difficult to have a cogent policy regards Saudi Arabia and impossible to adopt one that's entirely ethical.
Thoughts?

You have/had this position of pinning your colours to whichever country/organisation maintains your status quo. Irrespective of right and wrong or justice and fairness. Political hegemony and realpolitik you called it.

It was in a thread that concerned ISIS. I haven't got the desire or inclination to spend ages searching out the specific quote. You stated you were not aware that the Saudi regime themselves are engaging in less than desirable practices.

Just so you know, Tidgy, I bumped Shaid's posts that were disparaging about me and or Christianity. I did this for no other reason than to point out his hypocrisy. I believe he and I have sorted that particular issue now. That assumes there won't be another time he implies my faith is or I am steeped in paedophilia.

a lot and then forgives His elect. Only Christ was and is perfect and the best His children can hope for in this life is a process of improvement towards greater holiness. I understand this is known as the 'perseverance of the saints'.
As Gandhi put it, "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
