Default Budget Smart Phone Recommendations Please.

I'm in need of a new phone so would like some recommendations, not too interested in the high end stuff as I don't want to spend a fortune on the phone or the contract because I just don't use it enough to warrant the expenditure.

Things that are important to me are.

Good battery life.
A certain amount of robustness.
Ease of use.
Not too big.

All suggestions appreciated.

Just buy last year's model of any of the top models galaxy gs4, htc m7, LG etc. Or if want a small screen get an old iPhone. Beware the iPhone 5 has a **** battery, but fortunately you can get a replacement for less than £10 takes 5 mins to change.

Yep, I've only heard good stuff about the Motorola Moto G. You can buy it outright for about £155 or you can pay £3 or £4 a month on a pay monthly plan for the phone.

There was an original 3G version and a more recent 4G version. Probably worth checking you're buying the 4G version.

Thanks guys, I've been doing a bit of reading and it would seem as though your right, the reviewers seem to like it and the features, I'm not too fussed about the camera not being fantastic as I have a couple of decent camera's anyway. Battery life must be amazing when your like me and don't really use it for anything more than texts and calls, maybe that will change.

If I buy a sim free one will I be able to put foreign sim cards in from other countries as well or are they blocked and for UK providers only?

What is one plus one?

One plus one is a Chinese manufactured phone that runs ASOP (android source open project) but with a twist that it is modified by the largest independent developer group, Cyanogenmod. It is very stripped down, fast but with bells and whistles.

Well I got one, not a motorola as they don't do them over here on Vodafone, (Croatia) I opted for a Nokia Lumina 630, has the same quad core processor and uses snap dragon I think and a better camera but the most pleasing thing is that it only cost 30 quid does what I need it to do and looks ok too, just need to figure the bloody thing out now.

Thanks for the advice and links as they did help, but in the end price won over fancy gadgets, I could of had the htc desire but it was a bit big for me and another 100 quid as were the samsung offerings.

Turn down the screen brightness, they suffer with screen burn.

Well I quite like it so far, I suppose it depends what your comparing it to. I don't really use a phone for anything much more than calls and texts but i'm quite getting into this app malarky, sat nav is quite decent and just downloaded a load of free tunes.

Thanks for the heads up, I only have it on medium at the moment and I'm not playing games etc so hopefully it'll last a while and if it doesn't i'll stump up £150 for the motorola, but at 30 quid i'm not too fussed about it, as above though, quite happy with it thus far.

My daughters Sammy Ace died so I bought her a Sony E1 for £60 from Asda on Voda to see her through to the end of the original contract next year.

Tidy little phone for 60 sheets, she loves it and says it destroys the Ace on all levels, having had the Z1 for 18 months I've been impressed with Sony so had no hesitation in getting her the E1.

I've had the Samsung Y for the last 2 1/2 years and it's started playing up, not letting me text or make calls, then when it did connect I was getting big silences and not able to hear properly as well as just not getting texts, put up with it for a week or so then had enough, I've been out of contract since feb so got a good price and unlimited internet for signing on again and it's about £8 a month so i'm at peace with it, knocks spots off the Samsung too.
