Road trip from Amsterdam - 11 days - ideas?
Where to go? Netherlands sea defences, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy? We like history, wine, castles, autobahns, museums, automotive, chocolate, industrial heritage, war stuff, walking.

If you're going to be heading in that direction, take 2 or 3 days around Munster and Colmar, and follow the Alsace 'route des vins'. Some fabulous mid-altitude peaks in the area also (Hohneck, Petit Ballon, Grand Ballon, etc), great for walking if the weather permits.

Thanks for the ideas, booked car ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam, very last minute. Thinking of allowing up to around a 2000 mile route and seeing where it would take us, will pre book most accommodation and draw up an itinerary in the next few days.

Sounds fantastic. I am always nervous about taking the scoob into Europe in case I struggle to get v power - stupid I know. Took my lad around some of the First World War sites in Belgium and France last month and we went in my daily drive (Golf). Would have been a lot more fun in the scooby!

It seems I need a Euro 4 green emissions sticker before entering Cologne which is to be my first German destination. Trying to work out the TUV Sud website, it seems I need to attend the equivalent to an MOT station with my V5 to get and 12.50 Euros to get one, or get 80 Euro fine in most of the urban areas. Any further pointers/experience?

Van Gogh museum is definitely worth a visit, his paintings really come to life when you stand in front of them, I always liked his work hence going to the museum, but was totally blown away by how lifelike his paintings are in the flesh, the depth and colours are absolutely amazing and totally mezmorizing, I could spend all day in there just staring at his paintings.
I'd go to Amsterdam for that alone and forget everything else.
Edit to add; be Very careful where you park in Amsterdam, I have been clamped there once in the space of 5 mins and came out from a friends new apartment in the morning to find a market stall where my car was, which is very amusing now when I look back on it, high as a kite after a breakfast splif cocktail of purple haze and northern lights wondering around looking inside market stalls to see if they'd built it around the car. then going back to the apartment telling my friend and he didn't believe me, so then there's two of us wondering around totally battered looking for the car.
Must have been a sight for sore eyes. I'm crying typing this, the good old days.
