Default Speeding fines set to rise

They are going to raise fines by about 300%, they must not be getting enough revenue in from fuel now so they will make you pay in other ways.

Rip off Britain, yet if your wealthy enough to pay these fines, you usually get out if it on a technicality.

I suppose it's worth looking at this in perspective, it's only at the proposal stage so may never actually come in to force.

Equally these are court imposed fine limits and let's be honest here, you have to be doing something especially stupid to end up in court. So if the threat of being fined thousands of pounds doesn't act as an effective deterrent for driving like Romain Grosjean down the M6 then I don't know what will.

It's not a hidden tax, it's a perfectly visible "Don't be a d!ckhead" tax.

Definitely rip off Britain, but are the fines not linked to your income - well this seem to the case with speeding ?
I guess the fines for rest of the offences it will stay low in proportion, far too easy a target the motorist.

Did you read the article?

There are non-motoring offences specified too. Also the proposal is looking at raising the limits on the fines - so if you have been stupid enough to do something so severe that it attracts the highest penalty then it'll affect you.

Yes I did actually read the article thank you
And I'm happy in what I say, I guess the rest of the non motoring offences will stay low in proportional to speeding offences, as the motorist is too easy a target / an obvious cash cow.
Eg look how the previous £60 + 3 point is now £100 + 3 points

I'm confused as to what part of that you do not understand?

I understand it all perfectly well thanks, these proposed changes to the limits of magistrate imposed fines will only affect those who genuinely don't deserve to be on the road. There's no change to your big standard SP30 for 5/6mph over the limit but if you do something stupid like this http://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime...y-9091656.html then you should get fined, and heavily.

If, like me, you can't afford a £5/10k fine, ban and or imprisonment then the answer is simple, don't do it.

Quick historical note. When I started driving there were no motorway speed limits and I bought my first house for under £10k

Mind you there was less traffic and not so many cars that would do say 150 mph although those lovely Astons showed a clean pair of heels. And Porsches and Ferraris didn't hang about.

And yes I know I am old

I am just waiting for them to 'establish a link' between speeding and climate change as then they can put the fines up even more!

The point is to stop you harming someone - I think it's called prevention

I believe that fines haven't gone up for a long time, therefore it's actually cheaper (in real terms) to speed right now than it was 10 years ago

Anyway rant away as usual

Try the ignore function if it bothers you so much! Of value enough for you?

Listening to 5 live this morning in the car and this guy said "of course the fines will be means tested and clearly if someone can't afford to pay they won't". So presumably a chav with a fifteen year old scoob who lives on benefits can thrash the **** out of it coz he can't afford the fine and the rich bloke who does 80 on the motorway will get hit for 10 grand. You couldn't make it up.

Think they have already made a connection, they are talking about reducing the speed limit to 60 mph in the four lane part of m1 through Nottinghamshire to reduce pollution levels during rush hour.

It's a stealth tax, but with 'for the love of the children' on their side the state can take the moral high ground and roger you up the backside till you bleed and there will be plenty of tiresome sanctimonious brainwashed individuals cheering them on with chants of 'You broke the law. No crime, no fine. Simple'.
Then again, as someone who only does less than a ton to avoid an instant ban, and because it's much harder to swerve round the little runts at 120mph, perhaps I'm biased.

Me too, I wonder if there are burglary forums where they all pi$$ and moan about getting caught, after all they're not 'hurting' anyone when they clear your house out while you're at work.
