Default Parkinson's disease.....so cruel

My dad lost his 25 year battle with early onset Parkinsons disease today and it was such a cruel thing to watch.

As with all the related diseases that rob people of their motor functions, it was awful over the last few months to watch stage 5 Parkinson's take his speech, voluntary movement and dignity.

Complete inability to be able to tell anyone where his pain was (he'd also suffered a broken neck amongst other injuries during a fall a few months ago) or what he wanted or needed, was so frustrating for him and those around him. Losing the ability to communicate with a parent is real tough.

As always with Parkinson's, you die with Parkinson's but not because of it. Cause of death on certificate listed as Pulmonary Embolism.

Sorry to put a downer on things but I guess it helps sometimes to write things down.

No more pain Dad
RIP

I'm so sorry to hear this my friend
I lost my mum to cancer in 2012, to watch a loved one suffer daily is truly heartbreaking.
Life can be so cruel.
Your dad is at peace and pain free now.
RIP Dad.

RIP.

So sorry for your loss. Thinking of you and your family. As you've said, I suppose all you can really do is seek some solace in that he is no longer in pain.

It's hard watching a loved one suffer whilst you're helpless to do anything. Thankfully your dad's pain and suffering is now over. Condolences to you and your family. May your father RIP.

Sorry mate, it must have been very hard for you all. As hollow as it sounds, try and think about the good times you had together.

Sorry to read this OP. It is crap watching family suffer. It's probably of no comfort to you but at least he doesn't need to suffer in pain anymore

I was in hospital for a couple of weeks last year and shared my ward with a few people who were hit by terminal diseases even though they led a healthy lifestyle. One chap i still remember was an English guy called 'Saleem'. He was in his 40's and wanted to get out of hospital asap as he was due to get married to his girlfriend of 19 years. I asked him out of general curiosity as to why he is choosing to get married after 19 years together. He told me he is expecting to die in a few months due to the cancer in his body. It was difficult to digest that this smiling cheery bloke in front of me has accepted he's going to be die in a few months so is making the most of it whilst he can. Truly saddening.

Really sorry to hear this Si but I don't think it's "wrong" to think that you are glad in a way as now his suffering has ended. RIP, dad.

It's a s,hit thing to get as it's not a killer in its own right but gradually destroys everything else.

Hang on in there pal.

Hey guys

Thanks for all the really kind posts, it's times like these when the true good folk on scoobynet come to the fore and you remember that there is still a good strong community on this forum.

I'm fine as I was really resigned to this and had effectively lost dad some time ago. Now busy having to deal with the arrangements and more worryingly, with my mum who has Alzheimer's (or dementia, it's just being diagnosed) and keeps asking how my dad is (they split almost 40 years ago). I'm now on my 3rd time of telling her that he's died, so that ain't much fun.

The fun things you have to deal with, being an only child eh ?

Thanks again and make the most of the sunny days

Sorry guys, really don't mean to write posts that are upsetting to others. On the contrary, I hope it helps and encourages people to make the most of things, value their health and not get caught up in petty squabbles or waste time on the less important things.
I guess that friends and family is all that really matters in the big scheme of things.....value them lots.

Terrible news mate, just terrible. I had my parents over for the weekend and although I can see my dad is slowing down a lot, I would hate the day he goes

Hope you get through it
