Default No insurance?

Do I HAVE to have my car insured if it's just stood on the drive?
Or do I need to SORN it too?

I've finally drawn the line at paying out huge sums of money to do 250 miles in the Scoob and bought a little diesel which should do 75mpg....it says....with no Road Tax.

So the Scoob goes off the road...covered to start with, then hopefully garaged.

I might even sell it come September.........

If you don't sorn it and it's not insured they assume you are driving with no insurance so yes, you need to sorn it.

I have to do this with my Caterham 7 kit car every year

Sorned = off the road (and no requirement for insurance/tax etc)

not Sorned (and the DVLA do not give a sh1te were it actually is) = Taxed, Mot'd and Insured

so simply taking your car off the road is NOT enough you need to sorn it or you will get fined

That's clear enough.
I've just taxed it until October, so will SORN it and have some back.

I've also got a full tank of fuel.......might syphon it for the lads. Don't want to leave it with a full tank, it goes off doesn't it? (it does in my lawnmower!)

Or might sell.....thirteen months MoT left, five months Tax and a full tank.......

Corsa 1.3CDTi ECOFlex with start stop.
60 plate.

Rosie will use it occasionally to keep the DPF clean

Short runs will kill it ! Make sure it gets a decent run once a week, my pal killed his Lexus diesel by just going to work and back (7 miles) but they did fit a new engine under warranty.

Enjoy the derv, mine runs on chip fat at £1.05 a litre ! !

If you do less than 10000 miles a year there is no point in having a diesel car it'll take years to make the difference back so they say.

I would still have one, just for the fact that

no - coil
no - spark plugs
no - spark plug leads
no - distributor (electronic ignition system)
no - damp/wet start issues
no - lumpy running due to an issue with the above

When I get a newer car it'll be a derv and a keeper for a few years. I'll simply have the EGR blanked and DPF chopped out/welded along the original lines. Sounds drastic but it eradicates possible blocking issues as all the above 2 do is 'choke' the car to make it seem more efficient.

Not to mention a 40% increase in torque with a map....

Full torque at around 2000 rpm means my Golf Tdi isn't as awful as one might expect.... that plus an easy 50+ mpg

I miss my Scooby, but once it's back in one piece, it will be a sunny summer car, too expensive to run for my extended commute.

Might look into that.

Looked at one of yours recently in Sainsways car park.
Asked the guy what it was like etc and told the bloke you wanted one, he said, and I quote: "he can have this one, cheap, it's crap, one of the worst cars I've owned!!!"

Went on to say gutless, not a good starter, and uncomfortable to drive.

Whatever floats yr boat.

Black and red.......

Aye, the chap who looks after my Polo TDI (VAG specialists) can either do said map or point me in the direction of someone else depending which marque I go for.

Not a fan of Vauxhalls (as Jeff knows funnily enough) and wary of Fords. I've got used to the better build quality and ride of something German (not to say I'll ever change my mind like). Ali B nailed it a couple weeks back with the comments regards marques all sharing parts now, ie engines, gearboxes etc.

What about if something happens to it whilst sitting on your drive, ( i dont want to state the obvious ), without any insurance you are knackered.

If something falls off the house claim on the house insurance, if something comes off the road and smacks into the car on the drive I doubt they will be driving away ;-)

Well securing your car is always something you should do when leaving it unattended / not used for long periods of time.

If you own a scooby you would usually already have some sort of measure in place I would guess.

Better with a full tank...the less fuel the quicker it goes off as their is air space for the volatile compounds to evaporate to.

Steel tanks also tend to rust in the area not covered by fuel (you should see the tide mark in the tank on my Land Rover after its been left stood).

You can get fuel stabiliser. I bought some stuff from Wurth which is supposed to counteract the effects of the ethanol along with other things. Not sure if it works or not, bit hard to prove.

I could waffle on for ages about this LOL

Yep....Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 diesel is a Fiat 1.3JTD/multijet lump. Not a bad unit, no worse that the competing Ford/Peugeot version. All a much of a muchness, because they all suffer the same issues. Until they start using EGR with proper filtering and seperation from crankase gases (I came up with the idea to introduce EGR gases via replacable filteration media and after the particulate filter, I thought this up years ago....I should have patented it, as guess what manufacturers are doing now? yep, just that).

Back in the day the Vauxhall diesels used to have Isuzu lumps...those Isuzu engine ended up being used in Hondas instead as I think General Motors ended up selling the production rights to Honda when GM got into bed with Fiat as they hold alot of patents for the common rail stuff (Fiat were the pioneers of it), so GM wanted some of that pie as Isuzu's venture into next generation fueling systems didn't fare so well (See Trooper 3.0DOHC - an engine designed by Heath Robinson), I'm pretty certain International Motors is still feeling the brunt of all the warranty claims on those things (Karma? ) .
