12 years a slave
I watched this and failed to see what the fuss was all about.
Yes it's an important, emotive and often poorly taught part of history but as a film just average, not oscar material.
I know it's unfair to compare a series to a film, but for those old enough to remember Roots...no contest imho

Cheer's saved me going to the flicks to see it, i'll wait till it's 3 quid in sainsburys.
Roots was epic, what happened to that kind of series, if they put it on again now in the wake of this movie it would be a major ratings winner, eastenders and the likes wouldn't get a look in. No doubt the PC/liberal "land rights for gay whales" mob would be all over it.

Your not wrong SJ, when it was on tv it caused chaos in the black community, I knew several that were so disturbed by it they would go out and punch white guys in the face because of it. So I don't see it ever making it back to tv screens any time soon, although attitudes have change somewhat since the 80's I still think it would stir similar emotions in the less well educated.

Something like Amistad is easier to watch because the good guys (white liberals) win.
12 years is more disturbing. Solomon isn't a hero, he barely manages to survive and is near broken at the end.
Ding, maybe you didn't like seeing a previous hegemony in a bad light? You identify with the 'winners' right?

TDW, don't be such an idiot. You're making a fool of yourself.

I haven't seen it since I was a kid but I remember it being a pretty powerful story.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, the author of Roots eventually admitted the main protagonist of his oeuvre was entirely fictional, although elements of the story were obviously based on wider historical fact.
The same can't be said of 12 Days, which was a bona fide autobiography.
