Default Night driving lights being dispersed?

Hiya

Got a problem on my 330d.

When driving at night the oncoming car lights are being dispersed through the windscreen causing a star / halo affect.

Only seems to do it where the wipers have worn down the screen - and not to the areas outside.

Is there anything I can do to improve it - polish or treatment wise?

I've done best part of 130k miles so ware & tear is likely to be causing the problem.

Cheers

J

New screen?

Made a hell of a difference to my Sierra some years ago when the old one accidentally got broken. Only cost me £10 in those days......

My 335d screen was shot to pieces by 60k miles. I save the hassle of getting a new screen by selling the car.

Car Chem Clarity cleaner and then v2 sealant work a treat.

After 130k miles, why do you say a new screen isn't ideal?

It's what I'd do........

I avoided it too; almost always trashes the sensor for auto wipers.

Do you have windscreen cover on your insurance?
You may get lucky & find a small stone has hit your screen.

isn't it built into the screen?

And do you REALLY need auto wipers?????? Don't you know when it's raining?

I would have rated a new screen as a plus selling point.

Probably not but both vehicles have them and I find them useful.

Off topic slightly...
Is there a way to have light scratches buffed out?

New winscreen should have a new sensor pad fitted with it.

Its like a silcone/gel gasket. Its not reusable, as air gets trapped when reapplying it (yeah, I learnt that the hard way ).

Most windscreens get trashed from using dirty wipers blades on dry screens....nobody ever cleans their wiper blades - go figure. Once the glass has lost its smoothness, thats it, new screen required. Obviously a "filler wax" will help, but will be temprorary, something more agressive like jewellers rouge maybe be a better choice.

Yep, that was what I read.

Is that a polishing compound and is it applicable by a random orbital?

I have a custom window screen on my cavalier. It's heated. Only trouble is the previous owner or a cleaner must have cleaned it with a wire brush. So many swirls
So I'd rather no smash it for a new one.
Oh and declaring it to the insurance was fun.

Iv had a screen professionally polished after an mot fail think it cost me £70 for my missus z4. Not cheap but it meant not damaging the factory seals etc, saved claiming through the insurance. It won't polish out the pits though.
Took the guy doing it about 3.5 hours though and there was a nice scaffolding rig over the car.

I do wonder how many people put up with this. My girlfriend was always moaning about how she hates driving at night because oncoming head lights dazzle her eyes. I drive her car in the dark the other day and it was unbearable. She's thinking it's her poxy eyesight yet her windscreen is scratched to pieces (years of dusty yard) and the headlights just catch all the scratches and spread accross. It's probably an extreme example but I couldn't put up with that.

Probably the best bet would be to get a new screen.... Problem is on insurance they'll fit some cheap copy screen and if it's one of the big windscreen firms will probably do a fairly **** job of fitting it. I think you can ask to have an original BMW screen and pay the difference but there is still no way of knowing how well it will be fitted.

the damn thing has done 130k miles already and he's talking of moving it on next year, get the screen replaced, and if they **** the job up, pull them up on it until it gets re-done right (as my Dad did last year)

This is the reason I don't want to have a new screen fitted.
I've heard of people having 3 consecutive screens being fitted either due to the wrong one fitted initially or bad fitment which caused it to crack, trim surround not fitting well and I'd rather not have the hassle and the risk of water ingress.

Yes, you can call them until they get it fixed right, every time they may damage something else in the process (paint etc.)
