Default British engineering excellence

The repairs to the railway line at Dawlish, which has re-opened this morning only a few weeks since it was wrecked by the sea, just go to prove we can still step up to the mark in this country if the need arises.

Something to be proud of for a change.

Yeah it's quite something to see how quickly you can get things done when there's a sizable sum of money riding on it.

Railway line cut down south: all stops pulled out, repaired in under three months.

Railway line cut up north, which carries ten times the freight......took nine months.

I'm never sure why everyone quotes that guy....a LOT of his stuff was poor at best. The Stephensons, Trevithick etc were better engineers.

IMHO

There is more than one way to get rail frieght to the north.

This is the ONLY rail route into the south west.

Simples.

Brunel:
the air/vacuum railway.
Broad gauge.

And yes, there IS now only one route into Cornwall....but that's the fault of government.

Ahhh, my ol' mate, IKB.

Or 'achey bay' as I accidentally said when reading a passage in History.

Although not as bad as when I said corset instead of Consett in Geography. Much to the merriment of my peers, sitting either side. It was torture trying to get through it when they were giggling and kicking my leg under the desk lol.

The atmospheric railway was probably a step too far with the technology of the time. But Broad Gauge died because of politics, there was nothing wrong with the engineering
