Default cameras on m42

just had this info sent me about the cameras on m42
As of the 1st April 2006 the new digital automated tracking system
between
junctions 3 & 7b on the M42 is scheduled to go live.

There are 276 Digital Cameras which have been set to a 2 mph tolerance.
If
you exceed the designated speed limit by this amount, the details of
your
car will be recorded; you will not see any flash as the image is
captured,
but will receive an appropriate penalty fine from the Authorities
through
the post.

2 mph is bonkers

There are going to be so many people watching their speedo's instead of the road and traffic it's going to cause an accident

have heard this from a 'reliable' source.. they will only be 'set' as it were , when the speed limits are set at a LOWER THAN STANDARD ..i.e. 70mph.. setting .. during tidal flow periods etc

Don't forget to forward the email to everybody that you know - not even IBM or Microsoft know about it - oops, wrong hoax

See Safe Speed for some discussion.

the enforcement cameras aren't currently live, but will be later this year. They don't enforce 70, as that's something we don't do in this country (not really sure why), but will enforce any speed limit shown with a red ring round it.

the standard guidelines for enforcement are speed limit + 10% + 2mph i.e. 68mph if 60 is showing, although some forces prefer +5mph as they can't deal with the number of offences at +2.

Worth noting that a speed limit with a red ring is mandatory and therefore a mobile camera unit of police vehicle could still prosecute until the cameras are working.

There are only a limited number of cameras, but they can be moved about, so no guarantee you'll always know where they are.

Best bet is don't speed.

Cameras are easy to spot on the M42

Look at the gantries as you approach them, If notice a small grey strobe looking box to the right hand side of each of the lanes then there is a camera behind the gantry. No strobe looking box then no camera. If you are not sure check out the gantries on the other side of the road.

most important section of this whole article is this bit

211 fixed operational cameras at a total cost of £1.25 million, together with eight fixed enforcement cameras at a total cost of £360,000. A further eight fixed operational cameras are planned on the ATM project by December 2006, at a total cost of £320,000.

Only thse can be used for speed monitoring to a degree where fines can take place, the others are just to monitor flow, exactly the same scheme has existed on the M25 for years in the variable speed limit area !
