Default Zie Uglybuglin'....

Part1

Ok to start with , some of you know that my big love afair with a classic impreza ended up having me this JDM Bug Sti in WR Blue ... The car wasn't in mint condition and needed alot of love , but i wasn't bothered to much as i knew alot is going to be changed in the near future anyway....The price was reasonable so i got it.... This is how she looked on my pic up day...

1st thing was to give her a proper service , fluids, brake discs , give her a good shake @ FB tuning......

So i got it to Richards we had a good look @ it and got an idea what would be needed for it to be done to make it healthy ....

The car had a couple subtle mods when bought, kakimoto exhaust system, genome sti gauges, some cheap front lip which **** its self off when going to Prodrive anyversary.... , some of you might remember that...

I was really concerned what to do with my brakes , what pads , discs to go.... I wanted something not to grake my purse , just for little blasts ocasionaly and daily driving.... There was a good deal on brake tech discs from Bob@ Aztec for the rears, and i got a set of Pagid fronts with the kevlar pads for daily use...

Oil changed

Brakes done, nearly forgot rear wheel bearing needed doing so got it sorted too. Now it was a time to think about a bit more healthy power....

Got a JanSpeed downpipe wrapped it in heat wrap.. PFR 7Bs, MAC 3 port boost solenoid, Walbro Fuel pump ....

So here i was again @ the mighty FB Tuning for his magic touch....

The bug felt much better after that one.... also the sound of the exhaust was awesome... That was filmed by Sergej from Peters (black blob) car on 2012 tunnel run...

Just before that i thought something was wrong with the rear spoiler , as it wanted a respray anyway i eventualy took it off.. It was a replica one bolted to the wrong place on the boot ... JDM bugs originaly came with the low level spoiler , high was optional so i decided to get the original item for it... I do like it's subtle "not in the face" look , getting old ...i think.....

Part2

As the days went by... i was exploring the differences of a new age car from a classic impreza... I can asure you .... , less weight is not everything....Although the bug is almost 200kg heavier it's actually much more stable and faster on the same route we go for our little blasts ....

Time went and i statrted getting my other goodies...

Whiteline ALK , rear drop links , Eibach Pro R springs , Eibach camber bolts, snapped Work Emotion XT7 18" wheels which wanted the refurb really so got that done, although the original colour was superb... Got them wrapped in Falken 453s From Magooly@RTS and found them superb for the money...

Before i changed my wheels to Works i sold my original ones... That was a big ....as their superb for track days....and my Works needed spacers which is not suitable for track work...
The handling stuff i fitted made some deifference just needed geometry done... Car felt good, fast enough for the road, much more comfortable than a classic, less raw but nice in it's on way.... It actualy took away the paranoya i had in a classic after each propern blast... Whats gonna brake this time .........

Time went we decided to go on a dyno, we Sergej and me bought a widetrack blob to send back home which needed a remap for 97 ron , it had nice mods SC46 and other suporting goodies , still made 390 on rollers... Peters blob with a vf 35 made 330/330 which made a very road capable car... Got a Cosworth Filter fitted rom Ricky so was looking forward for the outcome..Unfortunately my up pipe blew on the rollers so the spool and day was feked, still made almost what i excepted but that was not an excuse...

I got a bit fed up with it as alot of effort was put in it recently so it sat on my drive way for a while untill i got my self together , bought genuine exhaust gaskets , Scorpion 46mm uppipe, got it fitted and went back for a map tweak with Rich....

As we spoke what i wanted from a car , and Rich was giving me sugestions i was after for a new exhaust. I liked mine but always wanted what i had on my both classics, Fujitsubo Legalis Super R, they very rear these days , and most are bent scratched etc... I've found a guy on 22B selling a simillar thing , Fujitsubo Power getter which is almost the same as Legalis R but 2 peace kit...I got it fitted , map tweaked and oh boy , what a difference. So less restricted , pops and bangs and all other nice things i was missing since i sold my V4 with Legalis R.....

Recently had ups and downs with it in the snow , snapped wishbone, bent tie rod , but that's all sorted now

Scoobynet tends to be not as what i need from it, the knowledge so i found myself drowning on 22B, very technical, gives me alot of understanding about whats interests me.... My aim is handling so suspension/handling sections are were i found myself reading the most....
During the time i understood how the size and offset of the wheel works on the car and because of it i decided to go back to 17" .... Also as we booked Cadwell Park in March i got myself a set of original V7/8 wheels for track work . Sold my Works and got SSR GT2's 17x8J from Maggy for road....
I also got offered an amazing deal on an almost new RE070 in 235/45/17 form a great fella Fpan on here and got them for a summer road/track .....

Browsing the net i wanted to add something for the looks...... I always fancied C West front grill for it , but as the bugs are getting old now its difficult to get the nowadays, but.... I have posted on someones thread someday where to get it and Myles on here replied to me that he has one and is selling.... so i got it ...it needs painting but you'll get the idea..

I got a genuine Prodrive UK300 lip as well to add up , but that's going a bit later on ..... The best mod so far which affects the handling is the quick rack from spec c type ra i got from Max@Hurst cars as he was stripping one , also added Powerflex steering rack bushes ... It's an amazing kit and makes a totaly diferent feeling to the car....

Rack changed, new drop links fitted, had to do the rest of the fluids, looking into the future events, track days and our ocasional blasts i've added SARD Cooler thermostat and silicone radiator hoses....

Also Hel braded brake lines and whole system flushed with Gulf Competition race spec fluid.... As a track day is getting nearer i eventualy to go for Perfomance Friction PF11 pads , not going over the top so i could decided what to do with my brakes after Cadwell.....

Rich@FB Tuning helped me with the lines , also sorted one of the gauges and the knock link that were playing up ....

Theres a couple other little things i want to do before a track day so will try to update as soon as i'm up for it.... Hope you wont get bored

To be continued.....

I could possibly give you a little feedback as i had same brake setup on my classic before... They were superb , never faded on brands hatch 7-12 proper laps, BUT... Classic was 200kg less so that is very important, thats why i've mentioned before don't want to waste alot money on a brembo setup as it just might not be good enough and eventualy will end up getting AP's ....I hope not...

Yesterday i've tried my brakes on my way home from ruislip with a tad of spiritual driving and the bite is very good, braded line, good brake fluid and PFs work really nice together, the question is how long they will last like that before start fading...... I can only just speculate ATM but considering cars setup , without oil/transmition coolers etc the car should start building up temperatures anyway after good 10 mins making it want to cool down at the pits so i hope PFs will last that much.....

You'll love the bush kit mate. All the other kits are polyurethane and have some flex still.
The ASP kit is nylon and has zero give. Makes the shifter feel like a bolt action rifle. It's a tiny cheap as chips mod that I wished I'd done a long time ago.
Looking forward to seeing what you think.

Cars looking good too fella

Mr Postman was good to me today ....24 mm udjustable rear ARB

And another superb service from Alyn (Stockcar)@ ASPerfomance , got free advice as well when choosing the bits

One little problem ocured yesterday, it migh be a minor thought... Driving back home , another spirited one, was late, no other cars involved, 5th and 6th gears have a little bit of hesistation, basicaly it starts to pull....small fade and pulls right to the top again will have to go and see Rich at some point, but will do as soon as i recieve the RCM K&N kit , always wanted one, but 200 quid was to steep for my budget, got a good used one for less than half of that. Cheers Martin for pointing the guy to me

Pics to follow later on..

The Udjustable rear ARB made a huge difference the way the car is behaving, much sharper turn in and on the stiffest settings almost eliminates the understeer if you you judged your speed right... Before, while cornering pressing acelerator made the front end wash wide a bit so i had to use Schumis techinque by pressing gaz on and off very quickly to retain the speed and line ...now i can just floor it flat out as the fornt jumps straight in but the judgment of the speed entering is very important , if you'll go in to fast , you'll understeer... I have to adapt the way its works now, totaly different thing...

RCM induction kit arrived...just need to source the air box hose now and visit FB Tuning....

Also , got advised by some suspension gurus to get the bump steer kit, as most kits consists of extended ball joints and track rod ends which are not necessary i chose the Hard Race kit, just ball joints from ApexPerfomance....
Hopefully that will neutralize the dynamic camber.....

Great work Mantas with good quality mods

Make sure you scrub those RE070s well as the person I bought the wheels/tyres from had them stored for a good few years.

Looking forward to hear what you think of the extended ball joint upgrade.

They did Rey, i loved the way they looked, but everything else was wrong for what i wanted... The new 17" SSR's that are now are perfect fit just need to powdercoat them in hyper black and the best part is the weight 5.5kg without a tyre , that makes a big impact on stopping etc.... Come over on sunday to the meet and show what you've got yourself recently
