I've just bought a hawkeye. How can I tell if its crystal or urban? From the VIN? The V5 just says grey.
Also, is urban more rare than crystal?

Under the bonnet, on the passenger side you have your VIN plate situated near the strut. On the plate it always states your paint code. Look for either 48W which is cyrstal grey metallic or 45A which is urban grey metallic. Another grey colour it could be is 61K, dark grey metallic.

Urban Grey was used only on the 07 cars, so yes, rarer than Crystal.
