Smile My Nuburgring weekend

Thought i'd share some pics from this years Nurburgring trip.

Had a great time, weather was awful and I only got 1 dry lap on Saturday which you can see here

and heres some pics, including a rare visit from 2 Bugatti Veyrons!

Focus RS seems the Ring weapon of choice this year and the new Megane

unfortunately it all didnt go as expected. After a great weekend we set off for home at 11am but after 250 miles cruising on the Belgian motorway the bottom end started knocking. Ended up having to get recovered by 3 different companies from Belgium and the UK and get home at 7.30am, 20 hours in the car! She's going to get a heart transplant when my bank account has recovered from the trip, then de-tuned/remapped down to 280-300bhp to prolong the life of the gearbox/engine etc. If I want the car to perform i'll reduce weight rather than increase power so the brakes etc can cope better.

Overall, had a great time and fulfilled my ambition of a sub 10 minute lap

Everyone should do it, it doesnt cost as much as most people think (unless you bend/break something).

Ferry - £70
Breakdown cover - £40
Hotel for 3 nights - £100
Fuel for 1200 mile trip - £400
Laps and spending money £200

If you go with a mate and share the travelling costs you can do a 4 day trip for around £600 each, thats what i've spent the last 2 years.

Thing is, you dont need to drive the ring to have a great time there. I've taken 2 friends in the last 2 years and they've said its the whole experience that is a buzz. Its petrolhead heaven, just a shame its not open as much as it was years ago. Definately pays to plan ahead, we nearly went on a week the track wasnt open!

I got a quote from an online broker and used Green Flag but NEVER again. They were useless. Long story but their organising and communication was pathetic. I ended up stuck in a carpark at Calais after being run around Belguim for 4 hours, had to arrange transportation on/off the ferry myself and buy my own ticket as, despite 2 hours on the phone at 36p per minute, they couldnt decide how to recover me. Even when I did all this, and killed the car completely by having to drive it further than needed on a knackered engine, they STILL couldnt organise recovery from Dover without another 2 hours of phone calls. It took them over 7 hours to get me back from Dover to Leicester via 2 companies.

Will upgrade to a full AA or RAC package next time thats for sure, but it was better than 1 poor couple in an MG I met at Calais, they got ripped off 700 Euros for a 50 mile recovery by a French company!

Hope the weather is good for all you guys who are going, it put a dampner on our weekend and scared the crap out of me on my opening lap. Even on my dry lap you couldnt push it as you never knew what was wet and dry. Thats why i'm taking it so easy on the 1st part of the lap up to Adenau (when I pass the Z3).

ADAC (Germany' s version of the AA) do a full ADAC Plus membership which will recover your car and you back to the UK and to your front door.................. 79 Euros a year for membership.

Best money you will ever spend

I agree Hamster. I went to The Ring for 4 days in May and it truly is an awesome experience.
As you say, the whole trip is a petrol heads dream.

Good lap

Sorry to hear about your return journey.

So was it the 18th. and 19th. you were there ? I was there at the same time.
The weather was lovely and sunny.... shame it only lasted for 5 minutes at a time before raining again.

Just about every lap started when sunny had 2 or 3 spells of rain.

Good fun, though !

Awesome, hoping to go next year with a few mates.
Did you get/need specific track insurance?

Jimbob, you cant get insurance! No one will touch you that I know of.

Yeah, I was there 18/19/20th but like you say, the rain was just on/off all the time. I went out on a lap after sitting in the carpark for 30 mins in the sunshine and got to Adenau before the heavens opened for the rest of the lap. Lost count of the number of bikers that came off

The only good thing about the rain was that the super-fast Porsches and Beemers were turned into such Sunday drivers, having AWD allowed us to get our own back.
Loved it flying past all the 'fast in the dry' boys

The Ring is seriously addictive, though.
Saturday was my first time and I put 10 laps in.

Hoping to go in September but I could do with being able to get more than 20mpg. Is it true that you guys get 30mpg in your Scoobs ?

I was there at the end of May and agree with Skullfudge, the place is a petrolheads dream. Did 4 laps this year, 4 laps last year. Start to feel like i know it now (watching dozens of youtube vids helped )

Vid from my last lap:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2m6UX44f6Q

Not really set a flying lap as this one was quicker than my previous but i was playing with a mate as camera car at the start. This lap was 9:12, car is 250bhp bugeye WRX (still with wrx brakes!).

I reckon you made the same mistake as me last year Steve and have your tyre pressures too high, either that or you have crap rubber as theyre squeeling way too much for the amount your giving it. Good tidy lap tho chap, but you'd have been closer to a sub 9 if you'd had better grip and balanced the throttle a bit better rather than being on/off.

Yep, it was a scorcher of a day (about 28 degrees!) and i'd done a lap about 10 mins earlier and didn't adjust pressures in between, so i guess they were miles too high.

On/off throttle was mainly in places where i got it wrong getting on the gas to early, then realising it wasn't gonna stick!
