Thats where I've got mine - mounted vertically between the buttons and the screen (PSI3 LCD version). Almost looks factory, but as usual I haven't taken any pics yet.

Not in the ashtray. The whole idea is you need to be able to see it while driving (especially on max attack) as when it flickers up onto the red you'll need to react accordingly. Mine was fitted into the instrument cowling as per the first pic but mine was neater

Why do you need one / what does it do?

You'll be able to find loads of threads on here about whether it's really necessary to have one or not, just ask SunnySideUp (PSLewis) As mentioned it monitors detonation and any other strange engine noises as it is just essentially a microphone attached to an LED indicator. You shouldn't get any significant det whilst driving around in your Scooby, if you are something is wrong and it needs looking at. Typically it's due to a misfuelling issue causing lean running on boost and can be caused by the notorious MAF sensor failure. Left unchecked it will cause your engine to fail. Problem is a duff batch of fuel can also have the same effect so at least you have an indication that there is a problem and can drive gently until you have flushed out the bad fuel with a fresh tank of V-Power

as said above, it needs to be in the line of vision. I had mine in the lower part of the dash at first. Useless. Now as per pic. Have installed a beeper too, but it doesn't work on LED-current...

As said I run a MY00 fitted with the chocolate maf sensor.... running a knocklink in a classic is a good safety feature.

mine is in the drivers vent on top of the dash near the window, when driving at night, you get a nice reflection, like a small heads up display at the bottom of the screen
