Default Classic rear lights. Darker than standard

Has anyone took off their rear light cluster and darkened the Orange lense?

I don't mean like one of the chavved up looking Corsa style Black rears, I am thinking of a slightly smoked effect.

Obviously the easiest and best mod is the STI rear lights but I can't justify over £150 on a cosmetic rear light swap and as my car is Grey, a smoked colour would look better [imo] than the clear STi ones.

Just to confirm, I don't want the STI clear rear light cluster.

Any pics appreciated

I did something similar on my uk classic in mica red.I bought foliatech light spray in RED and did as you say,put two light mist coats over the orange and clear lower parts of the lights for a all toned in look.Just two coats is fine and you cant tell its anything other than original fitment, with original light brightness shining through ,no problem. Will put up some pics when i figure out how to do it!

With a bit of time and patience the tint spray approach can look good, bit of wet and dry etc, like all painting the finish is in the prep work

I know you said you don't want to go with the JDM tails, but here's mine 'smoked', painted with a mix of clear coat and black. just so you get an idea.

Heres mine from Rockblocker in the states, cost about £20 including shipping

1998 - 2001

They do a few shades of tint, this is dark tint, Very easy to do, don't even need to remove, simply clean the light with meths, leave to dry, peel off the backing and stick on.

Thats why I put apparently, I've not heard of it before either. It passed its MOT last month without comment, so they must be legal. I'm not sure about them being standard, but the first owner worked at the garage where it was sold, so maybe they knew where to get some from. Not seen any others with them though.
I think they look good whatever/wherever they came from.
